Spool-o-matic Build - Spec Ops 2.3L, BB FP Green

Anyone who knows me and my goals for my car knows my main interest is down low power and street drivability.... this car resides in NJ where 93oct is the one and only fuel source… with that being said, let us begin...

Brief History

I bought my car in Sept 2006 from a retired doctor who was looking to connect with his son. Him and his son both purchased Evos brand new in 2003. His son, a young driver with an Evo as his first car and a lack of experience behind the wheel, ran the car off the road with ~30k miles on it and totaled it out. Doc on the other hand, put 18k miles on it, and the car spent most of its life as a garage ornament until one day he decided that it was doing him no good just sitting there and he might as well sell it. The car was flawless... Exact guy you want to buy a car from – He didn’t want to mess up the stock mats so he bought aftermarket MOMO ones, then decided those were too nice, and to protect those he bought a set of cheap ones from Auto Zone (yes, I picked the car up with 3 sets of mats all laying on top of each other)…

Fast forward a couple of years, and I finally broke down and started modding it. I used to own a 92' DSM, fairly decently modded, and after that experience I came to realize that the amount of modification done to a car is directly correlate with the amount of random stupid crap that goes wrong - which is okay sometimes, but irritating for a daily driver. So, having finally broke down...

First round of mods... generic bolt-ons...

- BR 3" TBE w/ cat
- BR air filter kit
- BR MBC (which later got swapped for a 3-port)
- Muse Upper & Lower SS IC piping, T-Bolts, and a IX BOV
- Autometer 30-0-30 boost gauge
- Walboro 255 fuel pump

Dynojet Graph (93oct)

Round two... a year or two down the road... Everything from before plus:

- stock IX turbo
- BR intake pipe
- BR ported stock exhaust manifold
- BR FMIC
- GSC S1s and No tick lifters
- ARP head studs
- Grimmspeed 3-port @ 25psi
- SpoolinUp COP

Mustang Dyno Graph (93oct) - Special thanks to Petey and the KHC team for fixing some other shop's BS tune (I didn't bother to post the crappy tune's graph)!

Because these two graphs are on two different types of Dynos (among a million other variables, let’s not go nuts debating here)… for illustrative purposes with a standard ~13% adjustment from Mustang to Dynojet… let just say the 2nd round of mods got the car to 379hp/356tq… netting +66hp/+49tq from the first round of mods to the second (again, I am sure this can be debated until the end of time, but I just am posting this to give some background and comparative points).

Which brings us to the present, with almost 100k miles on it, the car made the utterly treacherous trip down icy I-95 in summer tires last Friday to get dropped off at Spec Ops for a 2.3L, BB FP Green build (specific mods below).

- Spec Ops 2.3L short block: Wiseco 1400HD's, Manley Turbo Tuff Rods, Manley 100mm Forged Crank, ACL bearing set, ARP main studs, Front Case, Water Pump, ARP 625+ headstuds, etc
- Curt Brown cylinder head: Supertech Nitrate coated SS valves, Kiggly Behive springs, race port, bronze valve guides, competition multi angle valve job, EGR port tapped and plugged, etc
- GSC S2 Cams
- Ported DBB FP Green w/ 84mm Cover, 25psi WGA, w/FP Line
- FIC 1100cc High Z Injectors
- FP Intake Pipe
- Comp Stage 3 Clutch
- Spec Ops Catch Can
- PPI ported Intake manifold and 65mm Throttle Body (which I am providing)

The crew at Spec Ops has been extremely helpful, and I have to give a special thanks to Josh for putting up with my 500 back-and-forth phone calls and switches to the build, and my **** retentive lists. I am truly a pain in the *** to work with and these guys have been great.

Stay tuned for pics and results…

Yeah, they seem to go ***** to the wall on part selection. Seems almost wasteful on an FP Green, but I was look for spool and longevity so I feel like this will be the right combo for those goals.

Thanks! I am from Somerset county near Bridgewater (a real small town which 95% of people don't know, so it is just easier mentioning a big town I am next to).

Probably something I should have mentioned as well. 99% of the parts were ordered and already at Spec Ops when I dropped the car off last week, and they started tearing everything down on Tuesday, so hopefully result shouldn't be too far out.

Of course every day feels like forever when you are wait to get your car back (and driving around in a Chevy HHR in the meantime).

What are you ultimately hoping for after this round?

Haha, sh*t man, you aren't far from me. I live in Clinton, right off 78. We should meet up once you get your car back. I know some other evos in the area, maybe have a little meet.

At the end of the day, as always, the *** dyno will be the ultimate judge of power.

... But, here are some comparison points:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...91oct-e85.html - Something like this, but pushed more (this guy was only on 91oct and the tune was "conservative") (VD numbers)

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...-pump-gas.html - Somewhere around here maybe... This guy is on 93oct, but with a 2.0l stock block and a lot less bolt-ons (Dynojet numbers)

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...-93octane.html - Another good example, but it is on a stock block with an hks cam setup among other things (VD numbers)

Hard to say, throwing out peak numbers can be problematic... differing dynos, setups, times of year when i or someone else's build got dyno'ed, etc... plus my overall goal really is more of a power under the curve type of thing. I'd be more excited about a ton of torque at 2500rpm than a late spooling high peak hp number.

Either way, I have faith that this setup and Spec Ops at the helm will make for a crazy/fun street car.

Yeah, I am definitely down. I always enjoy meeting other Evo people. It makes me feel a little less insane about the amount of money I spend on my car.

... well, yeah, that and you are on E85.

Damn, I wish we had E85 in NJ. I could only imagine how insane your car must feel. Good stuff, man!

There are a couple of E85 stations in NJ. My buddy who it set up for map switching tends to go to the one near the car rental places at Newark Airport. Easy access off of several major highways! Extra power from the pump.

Yeah, at the airport and there is one or two other spots approx 1hr away from where I am. Not really realistic for me. If I lived closer to the airport (or the pump in Hamilton) then I could see going for the map switch.

Thank you for chiming in on my other thread. I can't wait to see what this thing does.

You should just drop a ls3 in it. Ps...you forgot to mention that you took the snow tires off less than a week before!
