Evo IX SSL Rebuild/Build

#Phoenix #BacktoStock #HornyTeens2015 #HouseofPower #WarrenGEvoIX

JUST bought my new to me '06 IX a week ago. Full bolt ons, ported head and exh mani, FP Black, catch can...nice stock block power.

4/28/15 - I take her to a local guy's house/shop to get a VBand welded onto a stock cat and installed, for inspection purposes.

4/30/15 - Go to take her to get tags/title/inspection. Crank her over...she starts...chugs like a dying tugboat (worse than usual, cold start is horrid...tune needed adjusting)...then died within a minute. Refused to restart, sounded very angry from the bowels of the motor, "marbles" was a term I saw used in another thread and that makes some sense. Heavy knocking/tapping. Battery works, fuses are good, full tank of gas. Didn't have a second set of hands to check fuel pump voltage or spark plug firing. Pulled upper timing belt cover off and saw the belt nearly falling off (see pic below). At that point I know I'm screwed...head is probably trashed. Got her flat bedded to my friend's shop to get her diagnosed for sure and start the teardown. He pulled plugs to check easy things first...and saw they were doneskies. Dropped a camera down the plug port and saw broken bits of valve on the piston heads in #3 and #4. At THIS point we know it's really bad...but until Monday when the head comes off we don't exactly know HOW bad....

I think the cause was a failed tensioner/pump causing timing to jump at startup. Just a theory. Mechanic thinks high EGTs (he's obsessive about them, old school) dropped the valves and jumped timing/killed tensioner. That makes less sense to me since the belt is obviously a thicker kevlar belt. Seems more logical that the thicker belt killed the tensioner or the tensioner was bad to begin with (changed 15k miles ago, two owners ago). I can't blame the guy I bought her from, from where I sit this was a freak accident/time bomb.

At this point (early, I know), I'm assuming the head is done (ported stock head, though HOW ported I don't know), pistons done, and probably some good scarring on the cylinder walls. Rods are probably good, but who cares they were probably going to get replaced anyway. I had been planning a build next spring...just gonna do it early I guess.

What I have now:
-JB FP Black (rebuilt by FP 6 months ago)
-Toxic Fab exhaust manifold
-TiAL 50mm BOV
-Buschur VBand DP
-Buschur 3.5" FMIC
-Buschur UICP/LICP
-Buschur 4" intake with Perrin filter
-Custom catch can setup with battery relocated to trunk
-GSC S2 cams
-FIC 1050 injectors
-AEM gauges
-NRG bushings
-Swift Sport springs

Stay tuned.....

Parts list update:
Shop spec 2.0LR build
-Block .020 overbore
-Manley Pro Series Turbo Tuff 156mm rods
-Manley Lightweight 9.0:1 pistons (stock bore/stroke)
-Supertech stock size valves/GSC springs and retainers
-All new timing components
-Kiggly HLA
-FullBlown 70mm TB (stock IM)
-Ported/port matched head
-GSC S3 cams
-Shop spec double pumper (inline twin 255s)
-Exedy Twin HD clutch
-Fully built/ported head

Fuel lines are stock, as are crank and intake manifold...those and upgrading the injectors with the turbo will be my next upgrade, not much else to do.

I decided yesterday to NOT have my local guy do the teardown/rebuild, he's not an Evo guy, I don't know the machine shops around here, and it just wasn't sitting right with me, especially since he's already talking about hone and bore of cylinders etc etc.... So I'm awaiting a pickup from his shop to take her up to House of Power in Pennsylvania...hopefully she will be on the move in the next day or two.

Pickup scheduled for this coming Wed. The wait is MADDENING since she's just sitting without even being looked at where she is now....All I can do is read on here, window shop for parts, and wait. Guess I REALLY need to learn patience now....

The owner of the shop is NOT happy I won't let him rebuild, and this probably burned any relationship we had, but as has been stated here before, if you let a shop pop their cherry on YOUR Evo...you're gonna have a bad time. Plus, HOP was already going to do the eventual tune so they had a good argument for wanting to do the build too.

Also, does this sort of thread belong in this section or another?

Been awhile since I did an update....

Car is at the shop in PA and torn down waiting for machine shop...few days left on that.

Root cause: Sloppy servicing when timing belt was done 15k miles/two owners ago....tensioner failed and timing jumped. Likely the kevlar belt saved me a full grenading; car failed when I turned it ON as opposed to 8k which means the belt likely had enough tension to get me home in one piece.

Damage: Head damaged but repairable (plugs mashed in #3 and #4, valves snapped and down in cylinders). Block good but getting a .020 overbore to clean it up and a full 2.0LR rebuild to custom shop specs (not sure piston/rod combo yet).

Other upgrades:
-Converting my single Wahlbro 255 to a Buschur double pumper
-Port match the head (previously ported)
-70mm TB (stock IM)
-Full head rebuilt/repair (GSC S2 cams staying put)
-Blanket for the FP Black
-Full timing component replacement
-Exedy Twin HD clutch upgrade (Comp Stage 4 was in the car and nearly dead)

Been a long process that isn't nearly over yet, but the plus side of having the car let go the DAY I went to get her registered/titled is that I'm not truly "attached" yet. My new girlfriend is learning the hard way how this **** goes....not QUITE a car chick but she does drive a manual Porsche...

Goal is a conservative 550awhp on pump 93 (no E85 here yet). The motor will hold north of 700awhp and torque will be kept low too.

Break in was being done when P0011 popped up...he's diagnosing THAT cluster**** before doing the fuel and tune. I HAVE to have this fixed before I get the car back in order to pass inspection/emissions....

Still chasing the P0011...waiting on a set of GSC S3 cams to come in before continuing with it. If the cams don't magically fix the issue the code will just be deleted and move on. Nothing left to do but tune at this point....

All finished and on the road. Looking through previous owners paperwork this morning the injectors are FIC 1050s not 1000s.

She made 450/350 VD @ 28psi. Tuner kept the tune very conservative because I'm still on 93oct. Looking into alternative fuels and a T3 upgrade later.

She drives like bat out of hell...the twin disc is nuts! Good usable torque down low, Black doesnt spool until 5k then she just freight trains to 8200 and never stops. 1st and 2nd are at redline too fast for me to shift yet, even considering i have NLTS installed. Just have to get used to it.

No Lift To Shift, Boost by Gear, Speed density

Got her back on the dyno in March to clean up the 93 map and dual map for E85. Dyno reads lower even than CBRD's heartbreaker. Made 433/370 @ 29psi on 93oct. Kept it especially conservative here since tuner hates 93oct and likes it safe. On E85 she made 505/410 at 33psi. Converted to dynojet it works out to 497/425 93oct, 580/470 E85.

Next step coming up is a 6466 Gen 2 kit with AEM fuel rail and FIC 2150s....well see how long the trans holds
