Evo 7 Restoration and Build
Evo 7 Restoration and Build
Small back story to get things going.
I bought this in 2011 essentially stock with just a 255 fuel pump and a tune. I played around with it for a bit and then did a small build, 272 cams, ported bbk full, e85 ect.. made 410hp 510nm at the hubs. I loved it for about 2 months before i wanted more so the next phase begun, I pulled the motor and purchased a 2.2L nitto billet stroker kit 10:1 compression pistons ( still in the box ), I had the head ported and 1mm oversized valves done, purchased most of the other little components to build the short engine...

Thats how I left it in 2014... I bought a ford ranger 4x4 ( the model just released in the US ) and hated it so i bought a Landcruiser built that and went camping over the years while the evo slowly rotted under the Australian sun. Now I'm getting tired of looking at it getting worse than I am so figure I better pull my finger out and get the ball rolling again..
Seeing as its been many many years since I've even looked at anything remotely to do with evos I honestly have no idea what my plans are for the engine and drivetrain. I had goals of a high powered build 700ish HP but I cant exactly throw a mint engine in to a decaying shell so the restore and repaint begins.
This Brings us to today, I've got the body mostly stripped ready for paint, I've got a painter chosen, a colour selected and a whole crap ton of OEM parts on order to get the exterior looking the way it should be. My current plan of attack is get the body sorted, move on to the interior and then figure out what the go is for the engine with regards to the bolt ons and fuel set up.

Today was a small but exciting day for me, she is on the ground again
cant remember the last time I had the Evo on the ground. The front wheel bearings were trashed from me rolling it around without the cv's installed so I got new bearings put in along with a bolt and nut to keep it from collapsing again. I also removed some add on wiring I've never been able to figure out what it does, it connected to a push button near my knee on the dash and had a connection to the clock spring. It looked nicely installed until i pulled it apart and found nothing soldered
then got rid of the retro 90's HKS turbo timer. Have my painter coming over tomorrow to discuss final prep and see how much further he wants me to strip it. Fun times ahead!
Ive had a large chunk of my door seals and window runners order cancelled so hopefully Mitsubishi can save me here, should hear from them Monday.

Deposit has been paid on paint, Evos booked in for next week saturday things are progressing a bit faster than anticipated hopefully some of my body parts get here in time ( door handles and Evo 9 rear bar )
So whats being done to the body? We've got the respray, doors, bumpers, fenders ect off windows out happening as the major part. I'm going as far as doing the engine bay the same colour but as the interior is just going to be covered up by trim I don't see the need to go inside. But while its in there I'm getting the rear fenders rolled not pulled, rust repair done being Australia there isn't a lot but still needs some attention, shopping trolley dings removal, properly welding up spoiler holes and also deleting the roof antennae.
The colour I've chosen is Mudslide brown by DNA Paints, its like a candy brown. I never pictured myself doing something like this but my body is destroyed and this colour is honestly amazing. Like most colours the photos just dont do it justice

It's time to start thinking of interior until all my exterior bits arrive... I already know most of you will be shaking your heads for my interior plans

She finally left this morning! with the main pieces new Evo 9 rear, new drip moldings and clips and better than mine 2nd hand door handle seals until the new ones arrive.
Im now currently waiting on a whole bunch of exterior and interior parts but shipping from Japan to Australia has been suspended hopefully this wont hold me up too long. At least it will give me time to get the bank restored for the real parts

Teaser Picture Below!
Boot holes have been welded and we have some colour down!
There has been a couple minor setbacks being the front windscreen shattered on removal which im pretty bummed about because it has the Mitsubishi logo on it but its glass so cant be too sad about that, and there is a bit of body work on the rear quarter panel which my painter says can be fixed up easily
He has gone further than expected and is going back to bare metal on the whole body so should turn out mint. Cannot wait to start reassembling this thing

Not a huge update, but parts are starting to arrive!
All new exterior trim pieces are here minus side mirrors as i cant justify the price tag just for the black piece that goes on the door, I'll get that cleaned up as best as possible. On the paint side of things my painter thinks there might not be enough to do the shell so we have ordered more. Hoping we have a painted Evo by next weekend
