Rise of the Phoenix
When I started building my evo I always had a goal of building the “ultimate street car”. I always keep this in mind as the car keeps evolving. But not only do I love driving it on the streets, I LOVE racing it! Over the years I’ve had a lot of fun and success (wins at Modified Mag’s Ultimate Street Car Shootout, DSM Shootout, Winged Warrior, Sport Compact Shootout, Import Face Off). I had what I thought was the perfect setup, so I didn't really change much over the years. Sadly after 8 years my AMS motor gave up.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psuwj8oby7.jpg Here is a breakdown of some of the old setup: AMS 2.3 Stroker 8.5:1 Pistons Tomei 280 Pro Cams AMS 850R Turbo Kit (6262) AMS Race VSR Intake Manifold AMS Race Intercooler AMS 3" Intercooler Piping Tial BOV ID2000 injectors AMS 1000 HP Fuel System AMS C.O.P. AEM V2 EMS AiM Dash Bushwacker Transmission Exedy/AMS Push Style Triple Metallic Clutch Torqueline C/F Driveshaft Ohlins FLAG Series Coilovers Volk TE37 18 x 9.5 AMS C/F Roof 777hp @40psi 9.72 @144 mph So the question became do I just rebuild the motor and stick with the standard AMS 2.3 or do I try and build something even bigger and risk giving up power band and drivability. After talking with AMS we decided that the AMS 2.3RR motor with the 4G64 block would be the best motor for me. Also going from 8.5:1 compression to 10.5:1 to help the turbo spool a bit better. I haven’t ran pump gas in over 5 years. This meant that I would now have more RPMs to play with and I could look in to upgrading my turbo setup. http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps6vwxhhto.jpg After lots and lots of research I picked the PTE 6466. I was hoping to not lose much spool and pick up a lot more on the top end. With my 6262 making 777hp I was expecting a lot out of the 6466. Also I needed a turbo kit as I wanted to move to a V-band setup from my AMS ford 5 bolt kit. Forward facing is all the rage these days but I needed the ability to run an air filter. Luckily my friends over at Buschur Racing make an amazing kit with lots of room for a filter! http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psr4truhyh.png With some Help from my buds Greg, Jarrod, and Rob I was able to get the motor back in the evo and to AMS Performance in just under a week! They asked me to leave the car with them so they could dial in the tune and get drivability perfect. http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psd4zavmbc.jpg http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...pslvuy7rtf.jpg After waiting for what felt like forever I got a phone call. The car was at 901hp @ 32psi but the injector duty cycle was at 90% and they didn't want to go much higher than that. I told them I was comfortable running 95ish and they should push it more! haha After a few hours I got a 2nd call at the car was making 930hp @ 36 psi and the fuel was pushed as far as they felt they could. The good new was the power band was sick. It stayed over 900hp for more than 2500rpm! Over 600tq from 5000-8000 rpm!!! Here is a video of the pull! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlPb...ature=youtu.be http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psjli3d8ij.jpg I cant wait to get back to the track and see how she runs! Car is going to be a handful thats for sure! http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psljpkk6kl.jpg |
Looks awesome!

Congrats on the numbers. I guess that AMS 1000hp fuel system isn't really a 1000hp fuel system

900 horse at 32lbs is amazing for a 6466. You think if you had bigger pumps you get reach 1k?
|
AMS Thought it might be possible but I would be pushing the wet block to far at that point.

Amazing car, absolutely amazing, well done!!!
What kind of fuel is this done on? If its ethanol then that is where the disconnect is as ethanol requires more fuel which I'm sure you already know...just a thought |
Yeah it's on E85. That's probably is the reason that the fuel system is maxed before 1000hp
|
930whp, well damn! She sounds hungry on the dyno! Good luck & be careful at the track sir, I'm sure she's a whole different animal now!

Those are amazing numbers and a beautiful power band. Serious question- how long do you expect the motor/trans to hold up at that power level?
|
Ha ha I would love to know! The old AMS motor lasted 8 years at 700+ hp. The trans not so much. I'm hoping for 6 years on the motor and a couple years on the trans

8 years with 700whp is awesome!
|
Yeah for sure!! I had a great run!
