Drive/Fog light mod

Hey friends,

Is there a mod that allows the drive/fog lights to be turned on without having to turn the headlights on at the same time? Don't mind if the parking lights are on, but I'd like to be able to run the drive lights without having the headlamps on.

Back when I had my 20th Anniversary Edition 2003 VW GTI, there was a stock-looking cylinder you could just pop in place of the existing one that would allow this (might have even been the Euro version of the stock North American headlight activation cylinder.) The VW's had the German-style cylinder down near the knees that you rotate instead of having them up on windshield-wiper-esque lever.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If you have an OpenPort this can actually be done with ETACS Decoder. I did it to mine a few months ago.

Can you elaborate on this more? Or have a link to a write-up? Thanks.

Sure thing. You'll need to make an account on the ETACS Decoder Forums first. Then go ahead and download the program.

Make sure your Tactrix is plugged into your computer and car, then open the program. Sign in and flick the switch at the top left to "connect" to your car. Once it connects, click on decode so it can grab all your current settings. You'll want to scroll down to where it says "Front Fog Lamp Mode" and switch it to "B Spec" I believe it was. Then Encode and Write to ETACS. After your restart your car you should be able to use fogs independent of low beams. You will need to have the headlight switch set to the middle option that turns the side markers on. The program is a little finicky so you might have to play around with it.

Can someone with an OpenPort do that for me? I don't have one, and don't have much use for one other than to try that fog mod.
