I already broke the 12mm front the exhaust cam housing. Trying to bust the 17mm off the sprocket. Want to make sure I'm not making things harder for myself. Do I leave it in gear or out of gear when breaking the bolt? Also, does the timing tool go in before or after breaking the 17? Appreciate any feedback
To answer your question, the car in gear doesn't matter too much because there will be some movement in the motor regardless. You will want to put a wrench around the cam shaft in the "hexed" location and break the 17mm bolt loose with a breaker bar. The timing tool will go in after you have zip tied the timing belt to the cam gears.
Yeah I get that I zip tied the belt already. I've got someone holding the one side and me yanking the 17 on the cam. We just appear to be working against each other. Whoever is the stronger one moves the other at some point. Should the cam be freely rotatin like that, or will putting it in gear help?
Update:::: got em out. The exhaust was the only issue. The intake was so easy we almost smacked into the hood
haha, was this on an 8 or a 9? Yeah they can be very stubborn at times. Putting it in gear wouldn't take the slack out of the valve train enough to lock up the cams even with the timing belt installed.
I can usually break it loose myself, but having a breaker bar and an extra long wrench helps.
