All I'm saying is that there are options.

And it probably pays off after first overhaul..

I was told by guys from Porsche motorsport that the transmission overhaul costs went way down after they converted the cup cars onto paddle shift.. (using the same sequential box)

The affordable option is a normal H pattern dogbox.. .still more maintenance than a stock box...

How does paddle shift reduce rebuild costs? Is it really just from making the shifts consistent and eliminating opportunity for shifting error?

Yes. It greatly reduces dog tooth wear. You'd be surprised how hard you have to yank to shift a sequential with a cable shifter. It's not just a quick tug.

I understand that having the paddles makes the shift more reliable and in the long run kinder to the wallet, but it is just me that finds it boring? I've driven a few Golf R's and whilst I appreciate the speed of the gear change and the ease of use in traffic, I just don't feel entertained after driving them. Maybe its different when running over 500hp though?

It's very different driving an actually fast car, while trying to put in fast laps. Reducing driver work load becomes important.

10000% agree. As an example the GT3 / RS PDK is sooo much fun to drive .

Manual shifting is fun around town, but I'm all for paddles on the track. I know it's not the cool opinion to have, but paddles are great and DCTs are awesome.

Even doing just-for-fun laps in the racing sim, I still prefer paddles.

Yup. I'm at the track for lap times. Clicking off fast times is what is fun. Pulling 1.2g and trying to keep the car point in the direction you want while putting down 500whp+ with one hand on the wheel because you had to shift can really put a damper on things when you're going for tenths..

So.... Whose ready to start figuring out how to swap evox sst to 4g63?

The full 4B11 swap would be cool too, but its been in my head wondering if we can modify the bell housing (cut off flange, weld on new flange...) to adapt things.

ever put one of those pos gearboxes on a scale? It is really really heavy, introduces a lot of additional rotating mass into the system and is a constant source of issues...
I have one in my basement... will compare flanges.

Doesn't that thing like to eat itself if you put any real power through it, or get it too hot, or look at it weird...

Can't vouch for the 4b lasting, but the dang manual tranny is also twice as heavy and 10x weaker. Even though Jacks and these sites tout it's double tripple syncros and all this jargon, I've had mine for 3 minutes and I'm already replacing it. SST's much worse I heard. PPG or Xshift all the way.
