My new turbo

So yeah my turbo took a crap on me today after a pressure test was done on the system in search of what I thought was a boost leak in my upper i/c piping. Started the car up to drive it up on to the dyno and enough white smoke came bellowing out of the tailpipe that it was almost comical. So thanks to MalibuJack I just got hold of this. What do you guys think? MalibuJack and Zeus said it is most likely a JDM '04 turbo. It has the wastegate flapper design of the '05 but still has the 9.8cm squared housing like the '03 and '04 turbos.

Tanaka is really cool guy if any of you need stock like replacement turbos http://stores.ebay.com/Auto-Japan-Warehouse As far as ti components I would highly doubt that the turbo I just purchased has any, not for the price it was had for anyway

This turbo is basically identical to the 03 turbos, and every iconnel 9.8 turbo since the evo 5.. The only difference I'm aware of is the wastegate flapper.. I explained in a different thread the value of the flapper design change, but you should see very little performance difference considering everything else is the same.. There is the possibility that it also has the revised compressor cover.. But you won't know this without comparing the two covers side by side.. And nobody is sure if the new compressor cover is actually worth any performance gains anyway..

I understand, not claiming any uber gains, just needed a turbo, and this one that you sent me a link to fit my budget to a T, has a neat little feature of the new wastegate flapper design as a bonus

How did a pressure test mess up your turbo ?

I think they noticed something wrong, did the pressure test, THEN noticed the turbo was wasted.. I don't think he was implying a pressure test was the cause..

From what he was describing, it sounds like it nuked a bearing and either the turbine or compressor wheel made contact with the backplate or the inside of the cover..

Just an important thing to point out, make sure there's no obstruction in your oil feed lines and your oil cooler.. just be certain there isn't a reason why the turbo failed other than it just ate itself..

If you get it out soon, take it apart if you can, and photograph as best you can all the damage, it'll be easierfor me to see what caused it from pictures.

I had a boost leak test done on my car a couple of weeks ago. No leak was found. They pressure tested it to 15 psi. After the test, I was later advised that my car had white smoke coming out of my tail pipe. Should I be worried?

It depends, If the smoke was there for a very short time, and has since gone away, its possible liquid (condensation), oil, or something else was dislodged and accumulated and its just burning off.. you will have to check the turbo to be sure, feel the endplay and feel if its shifting, if its not spinning freely or you can see that its made contact somewhere.. Or even simpler, oil or coolant leaking visually anywhere..

I wouldn't be too concerned unless your getting white smoke all the time now...
