Gingerman Trackday, Incar from me, and then incar from autox... critques welcome...
First off, this is my second time at gingerman and the first time I was doing pretty bad. Thankfully I got some good pointers and I felt more confident this time around so I feel as though I did pretty decent. But far from great. Anyway take a look, I really hope to get some good feed back from you guys, so any constructive comments would be appreciated.
I took turn 10 a bit hot a few times... on the last lap of the video it will show you a little landscaping adventure... but anyway heres the gingerman video:
ps. Special thanks to Dropspeed for giving me some instrution, I really appreciate it, you helped me out a lot, sorry about the little incident, lol

That looks familiar-I just ran there yesterday with the VW guys (and Elise's, Porsche's, BMW's...etc.). I am far from an instructor (only my 7th HPDE and my first in the Evo), so take my advice or leave it-doesn't bother me.
The one thing about your driving style that strikes me is you always seem like you are off the throttle while turning. I found that the Evo (as well as the VW R32 last year) really loves to power out of the turn. This seems to me to be THE advantage we have over the RWD and especially the FWD cars out there.
I hit the throttle much earlier and aggressively and let it help me turn (probably easier with the STI than the Evo?). Also, I was on the throttle much harder between 7 and 8, sort of very slightly drifting around?-I thought it worked well.
After someone explained trail braking to me, I was experimenting with that as well. It was a bit dicey on some turns, but it really helped me on turn 6. After some practice, I ran 1:36-1:37 on street tires and was very pleased!
One more thing, I brake much later and deliberately-but I do have a paid up life insurance policy.
Good luck with your driving!
Johannes
note: I am a beginner and have never had a lesson (so don't take me too seriously)-but I was passing Elise's, M3's, and a GT3?

^ cool, thanks for the feedback... I agree, I feel like I could be braking a bit later... and probably will try going deeper next time I get to gingerman. Good info for the rest of the track, you are probably right to an extent about using the advantage of awesome corner exiting with awd cars... and maybe go in slower and exit faster on some of the corners... anyway thanks for the feedback, i do appreciate it
I'm faaar from an expert and I've only done one track day at Gingerman, but going by what I remember my instructor telling me it looks like you are taking turn 8 too wide. I will be very curious to see comments from more experienced members. If everything works out with my car, I should be out there beginning of May again.

what club are you runnin with? I've run with CGI a few times up there.
If you ever see any of the evo guys up there, or the rsx guys, chances are, they're some of the buddies up there, all good guys. Talk with Tim (graphite MR), or roger (white MR), if they're up there, they'll help ya out.

i watched most of it, seems you were cheating a little into 5-6, by turning in a bit early. 7-8 you're taking a line a good bit wider than me. I come out and kiss the left side of that center paved strip, then maintain it though to the apex, then shoot through, down to 10, where i use all the track to the right, and then slide over left.
i kinda early apex turn 9 as it lets me stay on it a little more, then slide across, as it's easy to do with the evo, and even easier to get on the gas early and slide the rear just a touch.

I told tim i'd let him borrow my traqmate, but i've been so busy with stuff that i simply forgot.
I should be getting my traqdata add on here soon, so i gotta do some more wiring, etc.
If i get up there this year, i'll post up whatever i do.
Thanks. I'll be back at Gingerman in June with CGI. I'm going for a 1:35 or better as I'll be on RA 1's then. Last year in my VW R32 (with CGI) I ran 1:39-1:40 on dunlop R-compounds. The Evo is much faster (I am on Buddy Clubs and basically have a WORKS 340 package).
I'll probably have a better picture of how I'm doing with my Evo after the Redline Time Attack at BeaveRun May 14th. I'm very curious as to what the very fast drivers can do with this car. Then I want to learn how to become one!!

thanks for the comments, the ONLY instruction I have gotten at gingerman was from Dropspeed that day, for a few laps (hes on here) and he gave me some good instruction, would have loved to get more but it didnt workout. I hope he can see the video and point out what I did after his instruction. I tried hard to apply his recommended line... but of course I am sure it was a bit off... =X
