Help with Tranny Decision

Here is my issue that I would like some input for. I went to the track the other day and I was having a second gear lock out. So I talked to some people and they said that it was common with the ACT clutch setup and to adjust the clutch pedal rod. I did so and it seemed better then I started noticing that 3rd and 4th gear became “sticky” and hard/firm to engage. This can be felt when just siting with the clutch in and shifting through gears. Driving is "ok" but hard/sticky shifting in those gears. I tried adjusting the clutch rod back to the original position but to no avail.

I talked to Shep and he said that it sounds like a sleeve problem, AMS said it sounded like a Syncro problem. I just changed the tranny fluid, no metal particles were found. There is NO grinding going into gears. Shep said that my transmission (6spd) isn’t good to hold the power I am making and suggested that I go with the 5spd. My mechanic also said that I should go with the 5spd because they are stronger transmissions, which I read is true. Keeping in mind this is a daily driver car with very few track days, one day so far.

What would you do? Get the 6spd redone by Shep who says he can’t warrant it for the power I am making, or get a 5spd and have it upgraded by Shep? Or is here a solution that I am over looking? If the transmission comes out I plan on getting a new clutch setup.

Go with the five speed. They are in fact stronger and in a straight line faster because your not shifting gears as often.

I'd say throw that POS clutch in the garbage as it is probably the biggest reason the car won't shift.

a 5 speed will affect your top speed somewhat because a five speed drops more rpms between shifts because it doesn't have that extra gear. it depends on what you want acceleration or top speed. its hard to get the best of both worlds but with the power your making I don't think that will be an issue.

I know, I know. I was gonna call your shop tomorrow morning. Do you think that is probably the main issue I having? Could a new clutch fix this issue? Thanks for the quick replies!!!!

and David said to trow away the clutch. I was planning on getting the act street clutch.
Which clutch would you recommend for a street car to hold around 475WHP?

The clutch of choice is usually the Exedy twin disc.

AMS, Buschur, and Warr say not to skimp on the clutch when doing modifications, and highly recommend Exedy. You might be able to avoid the problems I am having, if my problems are clutch related.

Ok, I will give Buschur racing a call tomorrow to confirm the symptoms. I guess it would be better to replace the clutch before replacing the tranny. Thanks for all the input, it's much appreciated.

Does anyone know if an 03-05 5spd will bolt up to an 06 with ACD? I read conflicting posts, if not I can ask AMS and Buschur tomorrow.
