IC piping size 2.5" vs 3"

Did anyone test 2.5" pipes against 3" pipes, how much is the difference, when is 2.5" restricting power?

Yes, I did do the testing this winter on my RS. My car was making 640'ish on our dyno when I did the testing. The car lost a slight amount of low/mid range going to 3" over the 2.5" and gained nothing up top.

My car is currently set up with 2.5" pipes and just ran 9.4 at 155 mph in full street trim with a 35r.

This is exactly why I run all of David's parts on my car. It is just awesome that BR takes the time to do testing like this and than make it known to all of us....

Thanks guys. I like the share the testing results but have to admit a lot of the testing is done "selfishily" for my own desire to go faster and have the perfect combination of parts on my own car

haha isn't that same quest that we all desire for? It's just more easier for you since you have all the right tools!

coldevolution8, you know I don't agree to be honest. There are a lot of people who are satisfied to just say they have added a part to their car, doesn't matter if it's the best or a POS, they just buy parts and put them on. Some shops are guilty of the same thing, they follow along what everyone else does and then they just "copy and paste".

The ability to go fast with a 4g63 today is simple. Pick up the phone and place an order. Some shops do the same thing. 20 years this November we've been working on advancing these engines...........that's a lot of research and development we've put out there for everyone else to just take.

Not everyone works hard to have the best and some don't even care. That's not how it works for me.

david, were the tests that you did with a 2.5 inch intercooler piping done with a 2.5 inch throttle body or a 3 inch throttle body

I've been thinking about upgrading my TB to the 3 inch hypertune and running 2.5 inch i/c piping but I'm not sure if the idle of the car would be compromised. Don't really know where to buy that 3 inch hypertune TB either...anyone know?

What would be a better alloy to use then? SS304 or Al 6061? I know the Aluminum would be lighter but I think with the stainless steel you could run a thinner gauge metal with the same weight savings as aluminum.
