What happened in Sweden?
I've been reading both the WRC website and Ralliart's site, and neither mention why Panizzi retired on stage 4. Infact, the Ralliart website doesn't even mention Lancer WRC04 results at all, instead covering the impressive results of the Group N victories achieved with Evos. (Which is cool.)
So what the hell happened? I can't find anything.
Anyone?
Bueller?

First gearbox that was in the car broke and didn't have 5th gear. They put in another gearbox and it broke and didn't have 3rd or 4th gear (forgot which one), basically after going through 2 gearboxes he just retired. Pretty sure thats why :P. Look for improvments on the Lancer WRC04 in the Mexico Rally, since they get a month to work on the car.
Yeah i also think that is what happened. it was 4th and 5th on the first gear box. They tried putting the original back in and that is when it lost 4th as well. Thats what happened to panizi anyway. Sohlberg had similar problems on day 2 and retired due to exceeding the time limit alowed for repairs.

Here is the official Mitsubishi WRC site that has live updates with stage by stage comments and notes as things happen as they happen. It's actually a very good site.

Both Lancers were gearbox retirements. Panizzi on SS4, Sohlberg before SS6, according to rally-live.
Actually a group N EVO7 beat both factory Lancers on SS1, and the Lancers were never much ahead of the Group N cars.
Of course, the snow rally is where the HP diff matters least.
(I'd go into more detail, but my detailed post got wiped when the mod deleted the thread.)

Here's your info you posted from that trashed tread which was one of the few informative posts in there. You're welcome to elaborate more if you wish.
I've been waiting to see the new "Lancer" get whuped by a group N EVO7 (or 6!).
Well, technically, I guess this was it. Neither factory car finished, and there were 9 EVO7s and an EVO6 in the top 25 overall finishers.
Actually, not just "technically". Going over the details (on rally-live), it seems that the new Lancers aren't doing better than the group N EVO7s on stage times, either.
SS 9 10 Best EVO7
1 17th 18th (70) 16th
2 15th 67th (41) 18th
3 18th 12th (41) 19th
4 dnf 19th (70) 17th
5 -- 13th (70) 14th
Of course, the snow rally is where the horsepower difference between classes is least significant.

I noticed on the WRC coverage of Sweden, (as aired on speed last night), that the Mitsi team has switched out the standard gearbox with a sequential shifting box.
The fact that both cars had problems makes me wonder what kind of mistake they made. You would assume that they probably had very little testing time with the new gearbox, but for both cars to chew em up and spit em out, obviously something foul was afoot in the state of Denmark. Er, Sweden.
Here's to hopeing Mexico goes a little smoother. Anybody going to head down to check it out?

Seriously. The guy is a machine: Driving consistantly that fast on snow without making a single mistake. Very impressive stuff.
