@ home dent removing

well guys, I'm not sure if you've read my post a while back about the dent I had gotten @ this party...
drunk guy punched my roof (i know i said hood before but i meant roof) and now there's a fist sized dent on my car's roof.

now, i know that in order for me to fix this dent i have to take that rubber by the window to pop off the plastic thing-a-ma-bob (yeah i'm big help, i'll take pix of it shortly) at the door by the window itself...

Location of dent:
roof, left corner, next to driver side/windshield, which makes it kinda hard for me to use that DING KING (which i bet sux to begin with)

Remedy:
taking off that side plastic piece by the window panel itself in order to take off the cieling cover off... after doing that, i can take a rubber head hammer and softly tap it out to a point where it's even..

problem:
the clips from the plastic piece = WAY TOO FRAGILE, and can easily break by pulling it off (yeah that's the only way to do it too lol)

can you guys help me out?
am i heading the right way?

I hope that this thread wouldn't be ignored much, cuz i think it could also help someone out later on, cuz I bet i'm not the only one that would like to know how to do this...

*later on, i'll edit to make clear with pictures and the actual names lol*

I've seen suction cup dent removers that they make now. Much better, and you don't have to remove anything. Or call those dent wizards. At least down here, we have people that will drive to your place, and a small dent like that will come out with that suction cup thingy without scratching the paint and they charge you like $80. Much safer way, since a mallet will probably leave some rippled metal.

I'd suggest looking for a paintless dent removal service, like urbanknight suggested.

If you're gonna do it yourself, then just getting to it is gonna be tough. Keep removing things carefully like you're doing and eventually you'll get somewhere. Then, when you get somewhere to do some banging, I'd suggest using that mallet to hit a 2x4 or something. Wood is soft and you can round out the corner of the wood with the hammer first probably. Then position the wood where you want to bang something out and tap it with the hammer. I expect you'll get better results with that method.

Dry Ice is another alternative, you wrap it with a piece of thin cloth and then place it on the ding. It's so cold it's supposed to shrink the metal, thereby removing the ding. I've heard of it being done but have never tried it myself. Remember that you need to use gloves when you handle dry ice, it can burn you very bad!!!

that's actually what I was thinkin of doing, by using the mallet and 2x4.
side note:
today i contacted a paintless dent removal place, and asked them if what i was gonna do was in fact the right path... now to my surprize (usually a business would say COME ON IN) they told me EVERYTHING I needed to do and that what I was already planning to do was the right way, but to just be careful.

they did ask me to come in tho to check out the dent to see if it were still possible to fix at home... i'm gonna go later on today at lunch hopefully get it fixed and done this week.

and thanks all for your posts and stuff.
