i mean, it would be REALLY nice to host videos - but i know there's a space issue.

maybe we could host just the interesting one's (choosen as "keepable" by the mods, of course)

I doubt it would happen, but what kind of videos?
we couldn't do anything that's copyrighted and street racing isn't allowed... so that pretty much cuts it down to drag racing at the track and dyno videos. and since you can host those on we todd did, wouldn't much much use doing it here.

I was just going to mention that. Videos eat up a *lot* of bandwidth too.

a thread has recently gone up about how there's a vid of some kid 'jumping' his evo. i've gone to the link, which is another forum, and they have a video section. but the forum is total crap - it took me forever to be allowed to regester, and when i finally could regester it wouldn't let me into the videos section. this happens A LOT when i try to view videos that people post links to.

i just thought it might be a good idea for us to have archived videos of evos doing some cool or crazy stuff - i forgot about the 'no street racing' policy we have though. does that extend to one person driving in a parking lot, off-road, in the street in a way not condoned(sp?) by the law? 'cuz if street racing is defined as 2 or more persons actually racing, then the kid jumping his evo would be allowable.

thanks anyway - just a suggestion

I would say it's really up to the mods of the forum that the video is posted in.
I have seen some regular video's of people playing with ebrakes in parking lots or playing in the snow that I know would be consittered illegal, however it appeared they didn't endanger themselves or others making the vid.

now if they tried it mid after noon in some mall parking lot... I would probably pull it.

see, the problem with most links (just like most of the links in that thread) is that they often don't work right from the start. and even if they did work to begin with, after some time they stop working because the video is removed from the server they were on.

my idea was to archive them here (not all, just the truly interesting ones) - that way the video will always work since no one will remove it - and if they did take it off the server, they'd remove the link to it too, so no one would be trying to view it all the time to no avail.

maybe we could temp. host videos? any time someone posted a video, it would be with the understanding that it would be taken down and removed from the server automaticly after 3 days or something. and the vids that are worth keeping around for their entertainment value could be archived and always viewable.

but even in that suggestion, i see the potential for abuse technically, someone could repost the same video over and over again - but if the mods kept watch, they could take videos off the server that keep reappearing every 3 days.

i don't know.....if we can't host 'em, we can't. like i said, just a suggestion.

huge bandwidth/space issues.
too much time on mods part.
hosting of illegal vids.

those are the 3 things that will shoot the idea down.

when people find a free vid hosting place, they will abuse it. people will start hosting things other than car vids. (****, big name movies, etc) that goes back to the mod part of it... we are all volunteers and do have real lives, we can't watch 20,000 people posting possible illegal/wrong vids all day. we all have jobs or go to school.

even if it was limited to say 15 mb each, which should be a a decent sized movies if captured right, we still have almost 24000 users, when transfering data that get costly.

I know all of them wouldn't be watching it at once or anything like that, but say you upload 4 15 mb clips that's 60 mb and say 10,000 people watch it that month. that alone would be 600 gb of data transfer just from those 4 movie clips.

my personal website hosting company only offers up to 100 gb transfer each month (they are little) and that is at 75$ per month, so times 6... you can see how much that costs just to host 4 movies.

while I'm sure mark gets much better deals on his hosting than my lil personal website, it's still freaking expensive to host movies.

I think this is a awesome idea. How do you all figure it will eat up to much space. All you have to do is post the link on where the video is. I know there a a few posts dedicated to videos but an actually video section would really be good to see.

agree this is a bad idea, mainly because of copyright and street racing.. just post in a video thread. or use the good ol search button
