upload space for movies

After having trouble with getting a movie around to people on this forum, I want to suggest having people with bandwidth and space on their hard drive to donate some and have it so that people can freely upload and download movies and such. Now, i only know how to use an FTP so if anyone knows a better way of handling files, it would be great.

Please Vote Yes! if you think this is a good idea.
Please Vote No! if you strongly feel that it is unneccesary.

Thanks everyone.
-Bob

There is another way to do this...it's called Kazaa.

Seriously though, I don't think it's really all that practical. Too many people like to have free use of their full bandwidth and system performance.

I have an HP400 and a K-class 9000 I could set aside, but I don't want to pay another 80 bucks a month to run them. Minicomputers are quite different than PCs, both in architecture and power requirements.

I also use cable for internet access. Please note that this drastically affects performance. Cable modems can download very quickly, but they're limited to 128kbps (kilobits, not bytes) on the upstream. Trying to download something from me would be like pulling a file at 8k/sec. That's if I'm not using the upstream for my purposes.

I think a movies section would be cool, but if it's gonna happen, it'll have to be server based, here on the site, which means it'll be expensive, which means Mark is gonna have to charge people to do it.

Stick with file sharing, or use AIM to transfer movies peer to peer. I'm not willing to toss down any cash for movies I either have, have seen, or suck.

Sorry man, you got one "bad idea" from me.

that's fine, i want to hear more opinions though. i just thought something like this could be handy.

ive seen movies on lancers and evos autoxing, home video's and other types of movies here on this forum, and since yesterday, i thought it was awefully hard for someone to share them if they didnt have a server they could use. it's just a suggestion though..thx for reading

Already got an ftp site up.

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...threadid=26574

Can add more space if needed but it would have to be a lot of videos to need it.
Hoping the moderators will stick it to the top of General because it slips down and no one sees it.

The thread was deleted at my request.
Running the site has become a huge inconvenience. The bandwidth toll was huge to my internet connection. The server was busy enough that I had to restart the ftp service twice daily just to keep the server running. If I come across better hardware that won't require so much work, maybe I will put it back on line. There is close to 9 gig of stuff on the server and it's available to anyone who intends to run a site. I already let nastea know that if he wants them all, I will send them along. Obviously due to he size I would be looking at doing it with a DLT tape or something.

Wow...that's a lot more traffic than I would have expected.

Seriously though, if you think the server has trouble now, imagine what strain there would be on a movie server.

2 DVDs would handle that. I'd save the DLTs for 40+ GBs..

Tym, you weren't using a Windows platform for an FTP service were you?
