Banner ads

Specifically the "Rallysport Direct" ad. This ad apparently is made with Macromedia Flash, and is *extremely* irritating. Is it possible to have this remade as an animated gif like every other banner ad in the world?

I haven't gotten it today. Had been getting it 3-4 times daily.

While we're on the topic of banner ads ... there seems to be at least one that uses ActiveX, which my browser settings won't allow, forcing me to click OK to the ActiveX warning, hitting ESC to cancel the page loading and hitting Ctrl+R to reload. Is there any way for you guys to ban ActiveX ads? With the security issues surrounding ActiveX, there's really no reason to use it...

I can't think of why one would need ActiveX. There are a few flash banners that require Macromedia Flash to work.

AFAIK, the only thing that changes from page to page (other than the threads that I'm looking at) is the banner displayed, correct? Well it looks like some (well at least one) of the banners are using ActiveX in some way shape or form, because whenever they try to load they get nuked by my IE settings. It's fairly random, but it happens about 1/10 tries, although yesterday I got 3 in a row

Here's the error:

Could you tell me your IE settings? I'll try and run the same and see if I get the same message.

Sorry for the slow reply, I've attached a screen-shot of the setting in question. Go to Tools > Internet Options, then go into the Security tab, click on [Custom Level...], then set the "Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins to "disable". Voila!

Dag nabit!

Over the past few days I have once again been getting a ton of these:

Sometimes I have to reload a page 4-5 times before I actually get an activex-free page. Could someone please look into this? Due to local and domain security policies, I cannot allow activex controls to load in my browser, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

you could be infected with spyware like mentioned above. they can mess with your ie settings and regisrty files. are you using any spyware blockers, pop-up blockers or possibly antivirus of any kind? many possible causes here - try doing all the necessary security downloads from microsoft. good luck.

from a flash developer it would have to be some serious actionscripting to set off the activeX. not impossible though.

Have you noticed if the warning comes up on any particular banner? The only thing that could use ActiveX would be one of the flash banners. If we could narrow it down, I can check on that.

Nope, every machine that I set a restrictive ActiveX policy on does this, and my machines get scanned daily for spyware and viruses. This isn't an issue for home, but for machines that I use to do business with, I cannot afford to be lax in applying security policies.

One additional note on the current ActiveX warnings ... this time around they seem to appear after the banners have loaded, so perhaps something else has changed in the site design...

Exclamation hah!

Ok, I've just printed and checked the 18 pages of code that this site generates, comparing a page that gave the error vs. one that (after numerous reloads) didn't.

Here's what I think I've got it tracked down to: This time around the main offending ad isn't one of the top banners, it's one (or more) side banners, like the kind used in the "[ EDIT ] your post" section. Unfortunately I can't give you the precise ad that is generating the ActiveX, since the banners are generated randomly, using a substring off the Math.random() function, which is randomly generated everytime I reload the page.

I can, however, tell you that it is NOT the Ultimate Racing side banner, but it seems to be any other side banner that tries to load. Also, approximately 1/20 I still get a top banner that generates the ActiveX error, but since it's like 1/20, it's really not a big deal. The side-banner, on the other hand seems to be a 50/50 shot, which gets kinda irritating ... hence this post

edit: Logged in @ home and the culprit seems to be the "shining monkey" sidebar ad...
