u of h is a ***** with their paper work! They always lose my stuff.

Not an evo owner yet! But will be hopefully next year. Out of curiosity, where do you guys/gals go to take your evo for servicing? I dont like taking any car to the dealer for service. Something always seems to go wrong or they can never "duplicate" the problem

Honestly, I take my car to the dealer for all scheduled service because I want a good paper trail of certified mitsubishi techs on my car in case they ever try to void my warranty. I am totally unmodified because I intend to keep that 10 year/100,000 mile warranty if it kills me! They are not wiggling out of honoring that! Hahahaha!

I've had good experience with other cars at First Tire and Automotive at the intersection of 59 and Hwy99/ Crabb river Road. They have excellent service, experienced techs, and they are currently rebuilding a blown evo, so they know their stuff. 281-343-5666.

Let me know if you decide to go there and I'll call them and put in a good word for you.

^thanks! I am just holding out for the evo x and see if there are bugs in them. As far as doing work myself, I am not the most handy guy

But you do make a great point of the warranty thing with the 10/100,000 miles thing. I just remember reading some warranty horrors on here. They always say as long as you don't mod, we will take care of it. But then if youdrive it hard they don't take responsiblity.

The mitsu dealer at the corner of 59 and the Beltway told me 17K miles is too early to do diff/t-case fluids!!! I said I want it done...'well, we dont really have time right now'...wtf?...guess I'll wait til I get back to Cali.
You guys know of any cool dealers around the city? I am at 59 and Kirby.

The Mitsu in Rosenberg were pretty cool with me. But not sure if they are still open.

CarBoy is right around the corner from Gillman on Bissonnet. I've had good experience with them.

I usually roll in early on a Saturday morning unannounced, and they get me out in about an hour. I just bring an MP3 player and some car magazines with me and wait. One time I went by after work on a weekday and they got me in and out (they're open until 7:00 PM).

Regarding service intervals: my 5th gear started grinding at about 20k miles. I've done trans/t-case/diff fluid about every 10k miles since then, because that's about when I start feeling the grinding worsen through the shifter. Got 67k now.

Hey guys, I just took an early lunch and went down to Gillman SW and sat in an Evo X.

They have 3, 2 silver, 1 red.

I sat in a silver one. Very nice seats, just not quite like the recaros in my IX. The instruments were very cool and easy to read, but even with the steering wheel tilted all the way up, my knees were touching... not a problem in the IX.

The front had lots of room but the back was very squished... and the trunk is ridiculously small thanks to the battery and the washer fluid.

The red one was up on the stand so I got to look around under it. Peter, the best Evo tech they've got there was working on checking all of it's fluids after delivery.

Two of them are already sold.

To be honest, they are a lot more aggressive looking in person than what i've seen in pictures. It was a lot of fun to see it, but I just couldn't get around the fact that when i was done, I got right back into my larger, lighter, faster, and way cheaperEvolution IX. Go on by and check them out.

-Rob

I found an old receipt from 2005 and back then it was $106 for trans, t-case, and diffs.

Thanks for the heads-up. I did just that when I went out for dinner.

Impressions:

They look better in the metal than in photos. The main thing is that they don't look as nose-heavy. And the blacked-out front which is just too....something....in photos looks better, too. Aggressive. But I think the base Lancers' front end treatment is better, with the bumper being body-colored.

Overall, the car looked much more understated than the VIII and IX.

The interior looks nicer. But I didn't get a good look in daylight, where I think the prior poster's comment about the quality of the materials might turn out to be spot on. But even so, I just can't fathom it being worse than our cars' interiors....

The trunk appears to be extremely small. I was actually shocked. It's without a doubt not as deep. It's possibly a little wider and taller. I'd be interested in seeing the relative volumes in the manufacturer specs.

The HVAC controls are nice electronic dials. And it has cruise control!

While I was sitting in it the salesman, who was very cool to me, just handed me the key and said "Let's go."

Uh....Okay....

I inserted the key, cranked it, and heard.....almost nothing. It was like starting a Corolla. My car - even though it's bone stock - starts with a minor window-rattling explosion and then drones like B-52 bomber. This was positively sedate. And I found that I really, really liked it.

You sit low and the beltline is high. I wanted to raise the seat, but could not find a button or handle for doing so. I don't know whether there's one I just missed.

I found side visibility to be less good than our cars. After nearly being the first person in Houston to curb an Evo X rim, I backed it up and got out on the feeder.

It pulled smoothly from low rpm, and when I pressed the loud pedal just a wee bit I could feel there was some seriousness bottled-up in there. I didn't spank it, but I did make one rolling run through 2nd, which was good for close to 60 mph. The car pulled cleanly to 7k. It didn't feel quite as strong as my car at the top end of the rev range, but that could have been imagination. The steering was still quick by comparison to anything but an Evo VIII or IX. But it did not have that laser-guided on-center feel. Still pretty good, though, by comparison to anything but our cars. Brakes were grabby. The relationship of the brake to the throttle didn't seem as good as in my car when I attempted to heel-toe, but I didn't have much time to get used it.

It's definitely lost some of the "edge" our cars have. In some places that's good (exhaust sound at idle) and in some places that's bad (steering feel). It's a very different car. From what I've seen right now, if I were in the market and all I was doing was around town and highway driving I would shop it against a G35 sedan. And for the money, I think the G35 would take it. But I would need to spank the X on some bumpy, curvy roads in the Hill Country before being able to decide whether the car still had that elusive "it".

Overall verdict: undecided.

Even if the X turns out to be a hit in the marketplace, and even if it's ultimately faster around a track than our cars, I think our cars will remain cool for a long time. In the same way the E30 M3 continues to remain cool.
