Brakes going out on a EVO X?
Brakes going out on a EVO X?
I just got my EVO X little over a month ago with around 4K miles. The brakes or something is making a very loud grinding noise when i brake but not all the time. I took it in to the MItsu dealer and they told me the brakes are fine with plenty of pad left and can't find anything wrong. What would cause that if it is not the brakes and Mitsu can't find anything wrong? Anyone got any thoughts?
My EVO X just went over the 5k mark and the brakes have started to squeal every once in a while, I just figured they were cold and haven't heated up yet. But as for grinding, haven't heard that yet.
i had that problem on a BMW of mine right after i got new brakes. Its something about metal shavings on the pads that are scratching up against the rotors. I'd tell them they need to replace the pads on the car, since it is under warranty they have no choice since the car is not supposed to be making a grinding noise
Can you feel it more on one side or the other? While turning? Only while braking? Speed variations? Does it pull the car?
It's easy to check your pads.
Jack up the car, take the wheel off and look right into the caliper.

In that picture, there is the disk (looks like a ladder in the middle of the caliper). On each side is the pad. Verify that the pad on both sides has pad left. Sometimes the pad wears unevenly and a quick exterior verification without pulling the wheel won't tell the whole story (since the inside pad might be worn to nothing).
Check all your wheels this way -- good time to rotate the tires
If it grinds when NOT braking and when turning corners, its likely a wheel bearing going out (which is a typical grinding item when it's not the brakes).
Also... if it just started last week, it could be caused by some of the rocks & sand from the ice on the road getting into the brakes (although this would be difficult to achieve).

It dosen't do it all the time and i thought it was because of the cold weather but i drove to Wacko and back and that was more than enugh time for the brakes to heat up. It only does it when i am bracking but it sounds like it is on the DF. I will check it out but i would have thought that the Mitsu dealer would have found something. Thanks for the info.
