ECU programming?

What is envolved with reprogramming the EVO's ECU? My experience is with RX-7's, which don't really lend themselves very well to tuning. You basically purchased a piggy back computer similar to the XEDE. Does the EVO's ECU allow a tuner to just plug-in and change variables?

I ask becuase I'm making my plans for the fall. I want to bring my car up to about 300WHP safely. This appears to be a pretty low target for the engine. I just want to know the best way to get there. Should I shell out for a XEDE, or can the stock ECU be reprogrammed well enough to achieve my goal for less mula?

TIA

the stock ecu can be reflashed, but if you plan on doing it yourself you need http://www.technosquareinc.com/products.htm the trchtom hardware $1500-2000. or you can send it out for flashes everytime you do a mod. or you can get the xede or similar piggyback that controls boost, a/f and timing. you could expect to make 285-295 on a vishnu stage 1 on the local dynos. if you put cams in you should make around 320. i really can't comment on other setups. hope this helps.
