EvoSam, do you have the Thinkpad software installed? Usually you can activate/deactivate ports within the Thinkpad utilities. If you don't have it, you can probably download it from IBM.

I'm running XP on a 233Mhz dell laptop... XP requirements are lower than you think. All you have to do is get rid of all the pretty GUIs.

I have already reported this bug to shiv and the orginial developers at chiptorque in australia.

There's an easy fix though. Download the adobe postscript printer driver. It doesn't require any hardware or any funky fooling of the com ports. It's kind of like a "virtual printer".

IMHO, the real problem is that it has to run on windows in the first place.

Chiptorque and Vishnu: Release the source to the communication protocol! Let us build a cross platform mapping and updating tool!

I agree I am running XP on a P2 333mhz dell desktop. Just set the tab for better performance. Thing runs like a champ.

You are assuming that the machine is running 233Mhz or better....it's not. More like 133Mhz IIRC. I just got into work and haven't tried again yet as I have to do some actual work for a while. I'll check out the Adobe solution and see if IBM has drivers on their site for this machine.

Thanks,
Sam

Oh, as for the port confilct, COM1 is associated with the IR port. I don't use it nor do I have any idea why I would need to but removing or disabling it won't rename the other one from COM2. I don't think the printer is conflicting with it at all as I doubt it uses IR.

Yeah, even with other serial ports disabled I'm pretty sure the bios is going to map the onboard RS232 port to the same COM number regardless if what you do. As Ludi said, tryin downloading the IBM thinkpad utility. That _might_ allow you to remap the ports in software.

EDIT: Hell, your in redmond. Walk over to the microsoft campus and start yelling at device driver engineers.

The thought has seriously crossed my mind, it is walking distance from me now. But, you have any idea what the security is like there? Pretty intimidating. There's a police station annex on the campus.

I'll give the utility a shot, but I did source a machine today that only has one COM port so it should work. The pressure is off though as the track day was called due to weather.

Offtopic, but you might find this one amusing. I interviewed there a while ago when I was graduating from college. For the couple of days I was there, they gave me a visitor's badge with one of those magnetic stripe thingys. I wasn't that interested in the job, so I made sure to try it on every single locked door I could find. They were NOT amused.

Out of all the programmable ECU software I've ever tried, XMAP is by far the most easy to communicate with. Quite literally, ALL the communication problems I've seen or heard of have been solved by simply trying another laptop.

Sounding a little like Bill Gates there ... "if the software doesn't work, all you have to do is upgrade the hardware..."

Watch out folks ... we have a Shiv Gates in the making.

When you install a printer, you could also use the “print to file” option. That way you don’t use a real serial, parallel or USB port on you computer.
