How to read knock/timing

Have my smart kit installed but Im wondering how to comprehend knock and timing with this system. Im using xmap3 and donors software but want to know what the #'s mean when its knocking and when I am running too little or too much timing. Can someone explain how I can tune timing? I dont have a egt gauge so that might not help too much

That's a very long and involved question. If I may suggest some reading.

Your best bet is to get a pocket logger and monitor timing with that. Timing gets pulled back for various reasons....air temp....air flow...coolant temp...ect However a timing number during a WOT pass should climb unless knock is detected. Knock normally will staircase and thus timing will be pulled back a few degrees. So an event where you see timing getting pulled back is normally indicative of a knock event.
