Tales from the Dyno 3/16/05 EVO 8
A new customer drove down all the way from Oregon today to get his white 04 EVO tuned. It came to the shop with the following mods:
Full 3" exhaust
HKS intake
Buddy Club 264/264 camshafts
Fidanze cam gears
Tubular exhaust manifold
10.5 exhaust housing
Fuel pump
MBC
Base flash from 3rd party (not custom tuned)
We baselined it on the dyno. It put down 225-230whp with good consistency. AFR was a bit on the rich side Peak HP was right at 7300rpm.
Then we wrote over his existing reflash with an XEDEFlash. Then we installed the XEDE that the customer bought used from someone who just sold his car
We left the MBC in for the time being and made no adjustments to it.
With the baseline Stg 1+ map uploaded, it made a reasonable 265whp. But AFR was uncomfortably lean to do the intake. It shifted the entire AFR curve upwards (leaner) by 1-1.5 points. So we richened up the fuel map (almost globally under boost) until AFR was in the desired range. Then we tweaked the timing table a bit to smoothen things out. Ended up making 278whp.
Then we uninstalled the MBC and reinstalled factory boost lines (which the customer brought down with him). Then we hooked up the XEDE's built-in boost contoller. Peak boost remained unchanged at 21-22psi. But boost taper reduced by ~1psi. Power was now at 283whp with good consistency.
All in all, we picked up 60whp at 7000rpm. And no less than 50whp everwhere above 5000rpm. It ended up around where it should be with the given mods. The road test went without hitch and the customer drove home seemingly satisfied.

He is a brave man to do that drive. I meet him this morning when I sold him the xede glad to know everything went well and he was within 2hp of what it was running on my car. Wish I still had my evo
Phenomenal job guys!
By the looks of the new graph, I bet the customer could not wipe the smile from his face driving that car back to Oregon.
The fact that you were able to sustain more boost up top with XEDE boost control is very interesting to me.

pLEASE EXPLAIN HOW THIS WORKS. My boost control via the xede was not working and I was not able to find the reason. Tried everything. I ended up going to a MBC. I was under the impression that a MBC may hold boost a little better.
Also, what could be wrong with my xede/car that would have my car seeing 27psi with boost table zero'd?
Installed a MBC and it works fine.
