Reading Timing?

What is the best way to read timing?

Today I tried a DSM pocketlogger and got very strange values. 44* at cruise and only 3* working to 9* at WOT. I am guessing the thing doesn't sample fast enough but that doesn't explain the 44* thing.

Anyway .... I know I wont be able to read true engine timing because the XEDE is adjusting it outside of the ECU's parameters but what is the best tool to read timing to determine if I am knocking or not?

Just a normal scan tool will give you the actual ECU timing. 44 degrees isn't out of the ordinary if I remember correctly (haven't looked in awhile.)

44 is normal for cruise.

If I were to guess the 3* happened at about 3500 @ WOT?

Well I know 3* isn't strange for the start of WOT but it should climb to 22* and it didn't unless the pocket logger was too slow. Very strange. Is there a suggested palm and software package to get? I was using the stein code with an M100 palm.

Can anyone provide more info on what timing is supposed to read at 3k WOT to 7k WOT?

More info on the palm and such would also be nice.
