I've noticed a lot of folks saying their running 50% meth and 50% alky. I don't know a lot about this but next week I will have alky installed on my car along with BR's 20g9. I thought you just bought the denatured alky from Home Depot and poured it in. What's the benefits of running a mix with water, and am I suppose to be doing this instead of straight alky? I don't want to blow the car up!! I have two car seats in the back!

You can do an internet search and find out a ton of info.

Basics:

Water is used for dramatic cooling characteristics as well as it's cleaning ablity(via steam)...
Alky or Meth is used for it's ability to substantially increase the octane rating...

Both work well... Alky is said to raise octane higher than Meth from my understanding.

That's it in a nutshell.

You can run Meth or Alky straight but you tend to loose cooling ability and some of the detonation resistance.

This is why people do a mix of 50/50 or 60/40... then you get the best of both worlds.

Some cons are:

1) Tuning is a bit harder and time consuming
2) If you run out and don't have a system that cuts boost automatically you could start detonating. At a minimum you need a warning light for low level or low pressure/flow.

 

75 meth 25 water I have found to be an optimal mix for lower new york weather but every area would be slightly different...

 

I'm guessing here...being in San Antonio with high heat and high humidity would I need to increase the water ratio? Maybe 60/40 or 50/50?

 

Yea I would assume you would benefit more from the increased cooling than increased octane, I would do 50/50 as its easier to mix...

I use straight denatured alky because I have the MC gen 1 kit. The pump isn't made to pump water. So I use straight alky with a little mix of lube (I forget what it's called).

Well, I just purchased the kit and a few other goodies. I dropped the car off this morning at Buschur's to have the installation completed. On my drive home I started thinking about something. I bought the front mounted kit and I'm wondering is there any danger of having it up front by the engine? I know this may sound stupid but I can't seem to get it out of my head.....

There was a post on this topic sometime back. I have the kit up front also but no worries from me and it's my daily driver.

 

Thanks Invoice EVO! I'm sure it's ok, but the thought of having alky near the hot engine was a little discomforting.
