MBT and water/methanol injection
Interesting queston, I think most of us on the stock ecu are limited by the knock sensor routine in the ecu. There is not doubt that the factory knock sensing algorithm works and works well, but it I think it is overly aggressive in many cases.
In general though, all the other factors that influence burn rate will also affect the timing curve when looking for the best power at a given afr and boost level.
It's also tough to do without a good dyno. We normally dial in the boost and afr, then smooth out the timing curve, then start adding timing in one or two degree increments until either the power stops going up or the knock sensor gets unhappy. You can see it from run to run when no other changes are made as you get closer to the sweet spot the gains diminish.

Abner, Hot Rod made some good posts on MBT subject on the waterinjection.info forum.
Mad, Hot Rod describes an effective method on how he has gone about this on his car without using a dyno.....not EVO owner but worth the time to search for his posts on this subject (MBT)= even if just to find other stuff he's posted.
Hot Rod is extremely well versed in W/A injection and it should only take a couple threads found when looking for his input on MBT to be impressed with his understanding of whats going on and why......very good reading.
