87 and meth...
Abner did (AKA SLOWCAR) didnt end up so well. (blown motor) I know it will work as long as your tuned for it... But it also means your partial throttle will needs to take out timing so it doesnt knock.
The main prob isnt the knocking as that can be fixed with a tune and the tephra V5 patch... its the quality of the fuel! It sucks and can be bad for the fuel system causing carbon build up and other crap like that.
You wouldnt put penzoil in for your oil change cause its cheaper right? your fuel is very important too! Thats why I put Chevron only maybe Shell... Good luck

I think he blew it with 87 + water injection if I remember. I can't find thread about him describing what happened do you happen to have a link to the post or thread about him blowing his motor.
I've considered this myself.
My thoughts are as follows,
Our cars do not have a very high compression ratio = good for cheap gas off boost
Meth makes up for the lack of octane during boost
You would have to tune off boost for less timing to avoid knock for sure, even on 91 I had to pull timing in the 80 to 120 load areas.
The best solution would be to use one of the pulsewidth based systems so you could add meth very early in the boost and not suffer from a rich conditon. Which would allow better timing. You could even add very small amounts before onset of boost to make up for lack of octane.

Being that I also work at VIVID RACING and his car blew up here the story seems to get told a bit here... MITCH was here but NOT the tuner just so we make it clear.
Abner was running water injection and 87 octain making around 350whp on a mustang dyno! with a stock evo 8 turbo!!! great power but it was lean and had a lot of timing and a lot of boost. It ended up not getting enough water to one of the cylinder (I believe #1) and blowing up. Proves that 100% water can make a lot of power but is not safe, in this case it didnt disspers evenly into all 4 cylinders. Thats why 50/50 is good because the lower viscosity of meth allows it to mix better and disspers better.
Its not the 87 fault but it did't help save the motor as 91 would of.
I dont have a link but I consider him a very close friend as we both lived in Tucson and he help inspire me to get an evo and learn about WI...

If you don't know Abner it would be hard to explain. $2 savings per gas tank is not the reason Abner pursued this experiment, with his engineering degree and good paycheck wasn't the matter of saving $2 per tank.
Abner being the innovative person he is he applied his knowledge and was trying to test the limits of runing 87oct with a good water system, in the process he went thorugh a lot of tuners: Dynoflash, Mynes performance and finally PDT.
The car has some ignition issues as well that later was solved with a HKS DLI II. He definately achieved a great power level but definately he pushed the limits.
