For those of you in New York:
NY has a reciprocal agreement for sales tax with California. This means you can pay the sales tax in California as required by California law. Then you can fill out the form in NY when you register the vehicle and get a credit for the sale tax you paid in California. However, it looks like if CA is higher than NY tax then you won't get the excess back.

Now, as long as California will give you some sort of temporary/transfer registration to drive the car cross country, you're all set!!!

 

You should be able to get that at the local DMV or I would guess the dealership as well.
