To tell you the truth, I haven't run hard all the way through 4th into 5th yet. I'll have to do it sometime and let you know, man.

 

yeah shiftin into 5th sucked on the 5 speed VIII. I know the new 5 speed IX has same 4th gear as MR and I am wondering if the 6 speed is worth the extra cash. I can pretty much deduce the 5 speed will suck shifting into 5th.

 

I actually thought the tranny setups in the IXs were different. I read somewhere that 1st thru 3rd is identical in both the 5 and 6-speeds, but I haven't heard about 4th being the same in both.

There's actually a breakdown in the owner's manual that states "maximum recommended driving speeds" for each gear for both trannies.

5-speed:
1st - 37mph
2nd - 56mph
3rd - 78mph
4th - 108mph
5th - ––––––

6-speed:
1st - 37mph
2nd - 56mph
3rd - 78mph
4th - 99mph
5th - 127mph
6th - ––––––

Maybe that helps a little bit …
