Moving to southern California

Hey all,

I am moving to southern California in a few weeks and having my car shipped there.

My car is lightly modded with down/test pipe and exhaust.

Obviously the wonderful state of California, I need to pass smog so I am going to throw my stock cat back on.

Question is, do high flow cats pass as well? I have seen people say both yes and no...

Also, my ETS intake probably needs to go as well but is the CHP really that **** about intakes?

Any recommendation on a tuner in the Diamond Bar/Chino Hills area would be greatly appreciated as well. Tuned on 92 octane so I was fine running 93 in NY but I'm sure I have to be retuned for 91...ugh

Thanks for any input.

Wow, who moves to Cali? @ChipperEvo

Welcome to the neighborhood for sure. Had most of my engine work done by RRE in Sante Fe Springs (about 1/2 hour from D-Bar)
  • Yeah, i would say running 91 you will need a re-tune
  • You will have to get on board w/E85 for sure? We have local stations
  • Im sure you would be OK w'the HF CAT (only if it looks stockish? If its polished SST, then a SMOG station guy may flag it)
  • Will not pass the visual w/that ETS intake
  • The SMOG check is visual & ECU related
  • Regarding the CHP or local law enforcement (i.e. Sheriffs Dept). If you get pulled over, depends on why you got pulled over & your demeanor, anything is possible (i.e. hood pop or more likely modified exhaust issue)

Your car has to look stock to pass visual. Most smog places are getting better at IDing aftermarket parts or are paranoid if anything looks fancy. Either way, be prepare to swap in stock parts or find some that look the part. I usually pass with stock everything other than an aftermarket O2. Even that looks pretty stock.
Other than that, cover up/get rid of/etc any labels/names on the parts. That will get you flagged.
There is a thread about adjusting your ROM to pass smog. Some of us have never found a way to make it work, but you may.

The two tuners I've used for my street and track cars is Jay @ Boosted Tuning and Gary @ Bains Tuned. Three cars, zero issues.

Good luck and welcome to the birth place of hotrodding and having CHP castrate your nuts any time you try to have with your car LOL
