brain reflash
Hi, I sent an e-mail to Works but haven't heard back from them yet. Maybe someone here can answer? (Already searched the archive).
I have a bone-stock evo and want to have the eprom reflashed. Since I live in WA State I assume I'm stuck with their 91 program. Does anyone know what would happen if I have the 93 flash done but run the car with 91 octane fuel? What about using gas additives to make up the difference - is it worth the hassle/expense?
From what I've read the Works reflash doesn't alter the boost from stock. However, I understand that Works has a new program in the works (pun intended) to alter boost. Anyone know when it's supposed to become available? Should I wait for it or go ahead with what they offer now? Any word if they will reflash a 91/93 program for a modest fee when the new program becomes available?
Finally, has anyone asked about having the stock chip (or a copy of it) returned? Since they have the original in hand, burning a copy would take about two minutes and cost about $3 for the prom.
Cheers,
Mike

Having seen the A/F ratios of the 93 octane re-flash, I would say stick to the 91 octane re-flash for safety's sake. You could start mixng your fuel with Xylene or toulene on a regular basis, but this would be costly, and also somewhat dangerous from a storage and handling standpoint. Off-the-shelf octane boosters are a waste of money, and don't provide enough increase to make a significant difference. Some also contain MMT which should be avoided.
We have heard that the boost controlling re-flash is coming soon, more than likely this fall sometime. Although current re-flash customers have one free re-flash for added mod optimization, I have heard that the boost control reflash may not be included.
Guess we will know soon enough.
Your factory chip is retained. Re-flashing just allows a new program with new fuel, timing and boost maps to be re-loaded onto your stock ECU. From what I understand Works downloads and files your factory program for future reference if needed. Hope ths info helps!

Thanks for your reply. The guys at Works seem to be too busy to return my email on how to order. It seems that Vishnu is coming out with their brain reflash shortly. Hopefully Works will get back to me before theirs hits the market.

Then we can talk Shiv into another visit to Portland, and do a road trip down there to get fine tuned on the dyno.
I had the same problem with Pruven Performance - Sent them an email a few weeks back with no answer, then tried to call them for 4 days straight (to place an order) with no answer. So I decided not to buy from them.
Mike, sorry if your email was overlooked. Please give us a call: (415) 641-WORKS. We can take your order over the phone and answer any question you may have.
N10S, thanks for posting. For the record, the 91 octane Brain Flash should be used where 93 octane gas is not readily available. 92 octane and over the counter octane boosters are not close enough to get the optimized performance the 93 flash is designed to produce.
When a 93 octane flash is used on less than 93 gas, the results are likely to be worse from a performance standpoint than running the 91 flash program.
