1G DSM ignition coil and power transistor
Has anyone "upgraded" thier stock evo8 coils to the stock 1g dsm coil/igniter package? Im having ign missfire problems arond 27psi with a gt35r, and regapping the plugs isn't consistent enough to rely on IMHO.
I belive this is how im going to wire it up:
stock evo8 coil wiring, each coil plug has 3 wires: ground, switched 12V, and a signal wire.
Im planning on using the 91-99 DSM power transitor and coil packs.
The power transistor has 7 wires:
12V in connect to one of the white/red 12V switched wires from evo8
Ground connect to one of the black ground wires from evo8 harness
Tach out not connected
coil 1 in connect to black/green singal 1 wire from evo 8
coil 1 out connect to coil a
coil 2 in connect to other black/green signal 2 wire from evo8
coil 2 out connect to coil B
stock DSM coil has 3 wires. power, signal A, Signal B. Can take the power from the other white/red switched 12V power wire for the second stock evo8 coil.
I think this should work fine for wiring, please correct me if Im wrong somewhere.
Im not sure of the software setup though. The dwell maps and settings are completely different between the 1300 DSM EMS and 1313 Evo8 EMS. I would assume the dwell maps from the 1300 box shouldbe used, but Im not sure about the "teeth settings" in the option box, as I think this applies to the cam/crank sensor that is still the stock evo8 parts.
any advise on the software setup? I have looked over some of the CDI installs and they seem similar, but I haven't come accross any info on dwell or any other software changes in the EMS pro software that need to be made.

are you sure that the 1g coil packs are better than the evo? most of the coil on plug setups for the 1g's are using modified evo coils. good luck though. let us know how it turns out.

Well, many evo8 owners have problems with the ignition missfiring at boost higher than 26psi on large turbo cars.
My 1g talon just went 147mph with completely stock ignition. 38psi and 160shot nitrous.
The stock 1g coils and power transistor are much much better than the stock evo8 cop with internal igniter. atleast from my experience.
Ill be sure to let everyone know how it turns out, as I think im on my own as for experimenting with it.
I don't know of anyone using evo8 coils on a dsm. Im pretty sure you are thinking of the chrysler 300M coils that are everywhere.

It Works
Well, I got the DSM coil and igniter wired up tonight, and the car started up just like normal. I used 1990 year dsm parts, as that's what I had the wiring plug for.
wiring was simple. 2 signal, one ground, one power wire to hook up. I actually merged the 2 ground and 2 power wires from the stock evo8 coils into 1 rather than leave them unhooked.
I have not made permanant brackets to hold the ign parts, finished the wire routing nicely, or tested it under load, but Im just glad it started and ran fine.
Will post pics and results ASAP.

Ok, cool. First wot attempt had some missfires at 25psi. But I had the 3 options for dwell min, max, and dwell teeth set to the evo8 defaults. I changed them over the the dsm defaults, no more missfires at all. The car runs and drives just like normal. I ran as high as 27psi (still on pumpgas, I just backed the timing down a bit) with not a single pop or fart.
the plugs were still gapped at .020, Im going to put in fresh BPR7ES's gapped to .028 and see if it will still run 26-27psi with the large gap. If so, Ill consider this a success.

Went to dragstrip tonight to test new ignition:
I conclude that stock evo8 coils suck a nut! I put old 1990 dsm coils and 1990 dsm igniter on the evo8, regapped the plugs wider from .020 to .028, and can nowl run 30psi of boost without missfires. Great how 13year older technology works better. Atleast it was a free mod.
