DIY transmission cooler for SST?
Has anyone ever tried mounting a fan on the transmission radiator? It's right in front of the left front wheel well. If you are getting a warning bing and it quickly says drive slowly and then disappears before you can figure out wth it's talking about. That means your SST transmission is overheating.
Ams has nice option, but i don't feel like spending $500 till this winter. The ams system includes a new radiator and a fan that runs whenever the ignition is on. They also lean the radiator top toward the front of the car about 30 degrees.
So I'm thinking I'll just buy an 8 inch fan and some wiring and mount a fan roughly the same as the ams solution. But, as I'm looking at it, I'm wondering how much more air a fan would move over the radiator. At 40mph would it even matter?
Which means that it would help a lot at my autox races, but not on a regular track where I would average 40 to 60.
Anyone ever tried kluging a fan on the stock radiator?

just a fan won't be able to help much and here's something on my compiled DIY list for SST Cooler
-fan size, depending on location
-get a cooler, size will depend on your location,setup & design
-oil pump abt 2gph
-an fittings
-an oil lines
-quick connects
-couple of an connectors
-banjos
-hoses & maybe some clamps
-wires, connectors, soldering iron, switch
-measure, measure & measure make sure sizes, fittings all match up
-SST oil, depending on cooler size but it'll be a good idea to get 10ltrs & to upgrade to better oil if budget permits
-rags, buckets, gloves
-wrench, drives, screwdrivers, the common tools
hope this helps and of course everything is budget permitting
do shop around there are a wide range of goodies you can get out there and deals.
maybe gunzo can chime in as he already did this DIY :P

My fix for the SST overheating:
An additional cooler in the front of the radiator, 9 row
Piggy backed to stock trans cooler.

Check out this ebay store wehre I got the oil cooler from:

about 50$ only. The fittings cost more, 80$!
original SST oil $110.00/4 liters. 8 liters needed.
I could have used fittings that were lower but could not find any at the time.
To combat higher water temps, I flushed the radiator. Refilled using pure distilled water and water wetter with NO glycol.
No water temp increase even with Trans cooler in front of radiator.
So far everything works great!

The best cooler is B and M stack super cool. I run one in my mustang its a 11" by 11" and I run -6 lines to and from the transmission. I have a fan that pulls 4,000cfm. I also use 2 quarts of devron 3 and the rest is John Deere (yes the tractor company) hydro-guard. Which is a hydraulic fluid, since all automatics are is hydraulic pump.
Leaving the line on the transbrake I never get over 160degrees. Trabnsbrake adds 150degrees per second roughly of heat.
Doing a setup with just that BM cooler, the tranny would greatly be happier.

Intercooler is an ETS. Just track tested the extra transmission cooler at Big Willow Springs in Rosamond, CA. No problems, only a slight moisting with Tranny fluid of one fitting from the cooler. I need to tighten it. No overheating issues of the SSTransmission. Track temp 90 F outside temp 83 F.
