DIY transmission cooler for SST?
#16
I know this is an old thread but I just put this on my car today and am racing it in NASA TT at CMP in south carolina on saturday. will let you know how it goes. its a 2013 evo mr.
I put these parts on . installed the cooler in series to get the fluid first and then send it to the oem stock cooler which I also installed a fan on the back of with an on off switch in the engine bay. total cost - $222.00
I also picked up some vw brand today to top mine off after adding an inline cooler in series - since its more system volume now - VW dealer said they keep it in stock and its only $22.00 per liter. G 052 182 A2
I added a flexalite3951 in front of the radiator right behind the upper intake on the front bumper area - fits perfectly. I piped it inline with the current cooler so that it sends the hottest fluid to it first and then back down to the oem cooler. I put a 6.5 inch spal fan on the back of it and wired it up with a simple switch under the hood so that I can turn it on when racing and turn it off when I come in off the track.
http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html...l-coolers.html this was 89.00 from summit and came with the mounts and the extra piping.
the fan: http://advancedsportvehicles.com/cat...t/view/id/115/ and a wiring harness with a relay in it for an additional 35.00
total cost for a really nice set up on transmission cooling that will be very heavy duty - $225.00
with piping the additional cooler inline it will reject the first set of heat and the oem will cool it further with the fan running. cheap way to do it and very high performance.

ran flawless
the setup worked great. the weather was cool - 48 degrees - but no overheating on transmission. I ran the car very hard for 15 minutes. no overheating in engine or tranny.
seems to work great.
I ran it in paddle shift mode and in sport and super sport mode as well on different runs to see what worked best and there was no overheating.

Derale 15860 Hyper-Cool Remote Mount Fluid Cooler
Derale 15721 In-Line Fluid Thermostat
Cooler was installed and working great. Got the brackets at lowes and new 1/2" hose and hose clamps at autozone.
Today I will be doing the electrical for it.
I'm doing a SPDT switch that was I can turn it on when I want to for track days. Otherwise it will go on at 180F and turn off at 165F.
For the switch I will have the top for manual turn on which will go directly to ground. The middle goes to the ground on the fan. The bottom goes to the oil temp switch.
