Replacing Parking Brake/Ebrake

Hey

I need to replace my Emergency brake shoes, as they have basically fallen apart.

However, I am not sure how to remove the shoe which contains the actual e-brake arm (The one towards rear of car)

The Pin holding the spring to the shoes is hidden and although I could possibly remove it (By braking it) I have no Idea how to put the new shoes on.

I can't get my finger - or anything else, behind that pin to hold it still, in order to remove the spring. Not sure if I'm overlooking or missing something here but any help would be greatly appreciated!

you just push on the shoe to compress the spring, and rotate the retaining pin 90 degrees..

Yes...but there is no access to the rear of the retaining pin when re-installing the new shoes.

How do I hold the pin still and in place when putting the spring back on? It will simply move out of place...

Hi Robyo23, welcome to the forum.

I am glad to see that you are willing to use and maintain your hand brake unlike some others on this forum.
As Cranswick said, you have to push on the retaining washer to compress the spring then rotate the washer 90 degrees to get it off.

There is access to get it on, I have disassembled mine to clean the linkage and replace the shoes and I did not have to do anything special.

For reassembly, you have to put your hand behind the backing plate to stop the pin from coming out, as you align and push the retaining washer on against the spring. It may take a few attempts and at worse another pair of hands, but you will get it done.

Good luck, hope to see more posts from you.

Thanks guys, had to put the car back together but will be trying again this weekend. Just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem - or possibly a unique way of doing it

I have changed many drum brake set-ups before, my only problem on this one was access to the rear of the retaining pin (one holding the shoe with ebrake arm).

Maybe I simply overlooked something!

yeah I meant the washer...derp...

the "trick" I use is with one hand I push on the head of the pin, at the back of the assembly, and with the other hand I used needle nose pliers straight on, to compress the spring AND rotate the pin...

^^ Well pin or washer both are there holding the shoes and both are a PITA. I understood what you meant though, you were pretty clear.
