Itching to de-rice (remove vinyl)
Itching to de-rice (remove vinyl)
Hey all, I've been wanting to remove the obnoxious black tribal (that was on my white 05 r/a when I bought it)
for a long time now, but I am scared that my paint has faded a little and the paint under the vinyl will be nice and shiny, leaving me with permanent tribal post removal. Has anyone done this before? The vinyl is really big and will look horrible if it is noticeable after it is removed.
Thanks for any insight.
P.S. I am not looking for instructions on how to remove vinyl, so please don't flame me for not searching.

Just get a heat gun and it will come right off. Mine had some Purple flames on it when I got it. It came off with a little heat and then I used some citrus cleaner to remove what little adhesive was left behind.
I think you should be fine, white is probably the best for removing decals. My RA is black and it had a 6x8 decal on the back from the original dealer in 06' and I just removed it in september of 10'. It had some adhesive residue left so I took some GooGone and cleaned it up in about 10 minutes. Then wash and wax and looked brand new.

Hmm, I've had 3 white cars and all seemed to clean up pretty well, BUT I can definitely see them turning it yellow though depending on how much sun they get and such. All of mine have been Wisconsin cars, so fading probably isn't as much as an issue as sunnier areas.
Hey mmoulton470,
Good luck with trying to remove the vinyl, from my experience it usually turns out alright. I want to say the paint might be faded around the decal also too, but it will probably fix itself over time. I took off my sunroof wind deflector thing and the paint was a different shade when taken off, but after like a month it blended together.
Also did you buy the car from carbiz in MD?? That ralliart looks really familiar! I remember it because they tried selling it to me when I was looking at the other one they had (which I bought).

Yeah, the section that I have taken off so far has matched the paint perfectly
I bought my car from Fitzgerald auto mall in Frederick, md in may of 2009. It's possible they bought it from carbiz I guess? Its nice to hear about some other r/a owners in md.. I've never seen a single 04-06 r/a other than mine around.

I am, however, having trouble getting the leftover adhesive off. I've been using rubbing alcohol/ammonia.. They seem to work equally crappy but do get the job done with a lot of elbow grease.. I'm going to pick up some goo gone tomorrow. Hopefully that will Make it go a little easier.. Also I'm using a blowdryer as I don't have a heat gun but it seems to work.

yes goo gone should do the trick. however when it comes to removing adhesive when i took off my emblem i just went through my kitchen and found something called soft scrub. it did the trick fairly quickly. it hasnt caused any problems with my paint in that area as long as you wash it off good after you use it since it contains bleach. i wasnt too scared since my car was white anyway. if you're feeling adventurous you can try it out.
