Smog + Turbo?
Smog + Turbo?
OK, I live in San Diego, CA. If I put on the RRM Turbo kit, how do I go about passing smog in 4 years? Because therez no freakin' way I'm removing the turbo kit just to pass!!! I'm assuming this kit is NOT CARB certified?!
Nope, you won't, as the turbo downpipe doesn't have a catalytic converter in it. I imagine you could pass if you had a cat welding into the downpipe (or midpipe?), though.
Or maybe you could have a shop put the cat in your midpipe, but put brackets on it instead of welding it, so you could run a test pipe.

In stupid California, you would never pass smog even with a cat welded in, just becuase you wouldn't have an official CARB Exempt cert. on the kit. It wouldn't matter if the smog #'s came out way below passing (which is the whole point of the check is it not?) because the stupid CARB board didn't certify it, so it's no good. Biggest bunch of bureaucratic BS I've ever seen...

I love living in Canada, so long as your exaust isn't dragging on the ground, no one cares. You could gut the cat on a brand new car and no one would notice or care. I see many cars burning crazy amounts of oil, no one cares. I guess that's because California has Canada's population in an area a 20th the size (or less.)

Like the US, it depends where you live in Canada as far as "Air Quality" tests are concerned. I live on Vancouver Island and we are test free so far. The main population of BC is in the lower mainland and has "Air Quality" testing.

If your omisions are too high to meet the standards the car is off the road. I got a great buy on a second car for my wife last year as the owner was moving over to the mainland and had bought a new car. It wasn't worth their effort to try and sell it there as it may have failed the test and cost more than it was worth to get it up to snuff.

Maybe I'll just trade the car in to the dealer at smog time and get an EVO? When I traded in my Dodge Dakota, they didn't even pop the hood!!! I had a bored throttle body, non-CARB intake, non-CARB headers, no CAT, and a Jet chip. Oh yeah, even my check engine light was on!
I guess another option is when my four years is up, offer someone a deal on my turbo to swap it out for stock parts? I'll have 100,000 miles on it by then anyway and will be ready for a new ride!
