you will empty the tank, drill it at low rpwms (if the drill is variable) and you wont have isues...

i may be wrong... but when i pulled the fuel pump assembly out of the ralliart it was identical, mounting wise as the 02-03 lancers. The electrical may be different... can't remember. If you hit a junkyard and pull that assembly out you should be able to drop it right in and just splice in the electrical if needed. Then the return barb is on there as well as the pressure. Also you'll eliminate the internal regulator system.

Just a thought... what do you think PRmivec? Ever checked that out?

so what your saying is find a tank from an 02-3 lancer and it has the return barb already in it? is that the only models that fit? could I use an evo tank? that would HAVE to be setup for return line because it is already turbo and at that rate wouldnt it be a better starting ground for turbo setup? I have NO IDEA so i am asking someone to tell me.

i think that the best way to go would be to add the fitting to the existing tank. the regular lancer fuel pump will probably not flow enough to support high hp numbers, then you have to modify THAT fuel system again. i think ill stick to the way pr did it.

you don't have to replace the tank... under the rear seat is the access to the fuel pump assembly. That 02-03 lancers have a return system and that top should be a direct swap. If your worried about the pumps just put the ralliart pump into the lancer top... or put in a 255lph and do away with the stocker.

Either way you don't need to do a tank swap just the pump assembly. I don't know if the evo one will fit or not.

Hey awesome, if I understand you correctly you are trying to offer a way around drilling out the tank. If not flame away, I'm pretty new to all this information. Thank you to both Boe and Pr for their assistance on this thread. It's all very good info to know.

ok.... so let me clear this up for myself again lol.... the pump itself has the fitting for the return line so all i have to do is replace the pump that is under the rear seat???? that sounds REALLY simple....

the only thing im not sure of is... Is the pump "inside" the tank" or on top of the tank? and will it pump enough to support a turbo? and if not can i go with the stock pump and add like a walboro so they work together???

the pumr can be unscrewed (it is inside) from the tank by pulling the back seats. then you have to use an evo fuel rail, and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to have the line to run the return line. swat out the actual pump fo a high flow pump, and the pump top from an es (it has the fitting already for the return line) and volia! return style fuel system.

basically this...

1) back seat up... cover off... take off bolts that hold fuel pump assembly as well as disconnect electrical/supply line.

2) pull pump assembly out... you'll see it has a little fuel regulator in the assembly as well as the pump.

3) use the same assembly from an 02-03 assuming bolt pattern is the same(think it is) and just replace the pump with a 255lph walbro. (yes to run turbo you'll need the bigger pump!!) The 02-03 will have the return fitting in the top of the pump assembly and no internal regulator.

4) install your evo rail...

5) install your regulator

6) run your return line back to the assembly.

7) hook up new pump assembly and all electrical/hose connections.

8) set fuel pressure and begin tuning.

That's about as simple as i can state it... hope this helps clear up confusion.
