Exclamation Installed My Custom HKS SRI.... (PICS)

This morning I woke up and decide to install my custom SRI today. Here are the players (if the pic's don't load, just refresh your browser):

The dremel used to cut out and around the MAS tube. I went thru 2 circle cutters to get it off.

Here is the stock ralliart airbox I got from OC_Ralliart yesterday @ his house. Me and my friend jared left the SCLC meet early to go pick it up, I was on a mission

Here is the HKS-type filter I had on my lancer es, I cleaned it and pre-soaked it w/ some filter cleaner.

Here is OC_Ralliart nuder stock airbox, . Thanks to my dremer I cut it out and perfect form and used my MAF adapter. My old airbox is in the garage, just incase mitsu wants to trip and deny my warranty

Here is the end final product, kinda ugly

First Impression: After I let the ECU re-read the airflow for about 5-7mins, I took her for a spin around the block. At first, I didnt get on it... finally I did and my engine GRUMBLE, ROAR and GOT LOUD. She pulled harder and the low end torque I lost from putting on my axelback exhaust, I GOT BACK! There is a whistle - sucking air sound (almost like a spooling) @ 2k rpms to 3.5rpms, than it calms a lil than @ 5k rpms it gets crazy loud and goes all the way to 5.7k rpms. The sound is sick and I love it. Overall im impressed w/ the SRI and it's throttle response is dead on, car pulls hard and strong and DEF a new BEAST! OMG, im in LOVE AGAIN... like the minute I bought her off the lot.

can somebody explain that between 3.5k rpms and 5k rpms, the sucking sounds goes MUTE? 2k - 3.5k rpms its loud, than 3.5k to 5k rpms its mute. 5k - 6k rpms its noticably loud. Is there something wrong here?

I do believe it has to do with your intake box. At certain rpms, it does its job baffling sound while at other rpms your intake overwhelms it.

Is that what that little apendix looking thing on the intake before the box does? I thought that might be it! Oh well, surgery is sometimes necessary I guess!

I have sucking noise until 3500 RPM then the noise of the intake takes over.

That's normal on the RA's. My CAI makes the sucking noise until the MIVEC switch (3600), then I don't hear anything until around 5500rpm.

I did my custom SRI today also. I too did the cut job on the intake box, but I used a one handled hacksaw to cut it... it was surprisingly easy and clean.

I'm sure it might perform better at first (before the engine bay heats up), but the noise probably induces more of a placebo effect after that. The IS300 is a classic example. Due to the enomous inline-6, there is no room for a CAI. They don't exhist. Many of the short ram intakes actually hurt power gains. The next generation ones had heat shields and were more effective. To each their own, but I personally wouldn't do it.

A motor that is so large that you cant even fit a CAI into it would have a very hot engine bay. Our bays are much more open to air circulation... Im not saying that some heat soak will occur, but it wont be as much, and our stock intakes are so restrictive that even a SRI will help. Having said that, a CAI is on its way to my engine bay
