Question Servicing?

Hi, I live in the UK and I've recently got myself a 1998 model lancer, it uses the same 1.8GDI 4G93 engine as the japanese lancer, but it's dont over 120000 miles, and its making a taping sound now and again.

i'm going to take it to the dealer to get the cam belt changed as it has no service history and i dont know when it was last changed, does anyone have any other ideas as to what i could have serviced while they change the cam belt as they have to take the engine out to do it, if they do several things at once it'll save me money in the long run. or have you got any other ideas on how i can make the car last a bit longer? i've already done an oil change on it and put the most expencive oil in it that i can.

and does anyone know what that tapping sound is? it sounds like the tappits or the valves but it's not constant.

It's your tappets or "lifters" as us yanks call them. It's a very common thing with Mitsubishi engines. Unless it's really loud or it's affecting performance I wouldn't worry about replacing them yet. I'm guessing you want this engine to last for quite awhile so I'd recommend replacing the oil pump and water pump while the engine is out along with checking the clutch (if it's a manual transmission) and flywheel for wear. I hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Sorry but I've always heard the UK term for lifters as tappets from club m8's as well
