CEL and Engine shuts off at idle
CEL and Engine shuts off at idle
i think i have a broken flex pipe and some muffler problems because the sound of the car leads to this assumtion.
however my cars CEL is on as well and at times whent he car is in neutral the engine shuts off.... also the speedometer doesnt work at times...
Is there anyway these problems are all intertwined?
the mechanic has plugged in the electrical scanner and found the reading saying that the speedsensor is not working...
but my mechanic wants to put in a new flex pipe and muffler first to see if these will solve all the issues...
please only looking for feedback from people who actaully know mechanics and not just opinions ..
thanks

I would say these are two seperate issues. While the speed sensor would throw the speedo off and may even cause the car to shut off I doubt you would ever attribute exhaust problems to it. On the other hand the flex pipe being blocked or broken or the muffler blocked could cause a cel and probably even the car to shut off, especially at idle, it would cause the car to have less power as well. I think you should take the car to another shop and have them take a look at it. If the opinion over there is the same price it out around town or take it the guy you like and let him work on it. Chances are if two shops tell you the same thing then thats where you should start.
What is the car doing to make you think it's the flex pipe and muffler while it stalls at idle and the ecu says it's a faulty speed sensor
simple version:
if problem=flex pipe and muffler
then the following is a possible condition: the car may stall at idle, the car may have a loss of power, the car may sound dramatically different, there may be visible evidence of failure.
and the following shouldn't happen: the ecu sets speed sensor code, the speedometer is off.
or
if problem=speed sensor
the the following is a possible condition: the car may stall at idle, the speedometer may be off, the ecu sets the speed sensor code, the car may experience a loss of power(
about that one, but it's logical).
SO BASICALLY: Is it louder, muffled, choked, raspy? If so, it may very well be the flexpipe and maybe the cat, but I doubt it's the muffler. Our stock cat is pretty big, it would be hard to imagine bits of the flex pipe making it all the way to the muffler enough to damage it. If it's not any different then it's the speed sensor all the way, which I would point at anyway.
In any case, good luck

hey thanks for the replies guys...
well i got into a bad accident a month and half ago...so myself and the bodyshop are trying to solve the problems i am facing now...
my car sounds like a loud boat after 3500 rpms and at 5000 theres a high pitch sound like if metal is being grinded...
a mitsubishi mechanic hoisted my car and started hitting the flex pipe and noticed it was making this sound as if a metal peice was loose inside..
the bodyshop mechanic whos workin on my car noticed the muffler sounds like its messed up wehn pressin the gas gently..
so my insurance just orderd the flex pipe and the muffler... and they want to see if this will eliminate the speedometer problem (speed sensor) and engine shutting off at idle...
the flex pipe is ridiculously expensive...its like 1100 dollars....i think mitsubishi is F*^%ed up !!! crazy..
but yea im sure my car will be back to good in no time!!

hey dangerousdan I got my new flex pipe and new exhaust in (all stock) and the car still sounds like sh&T and loud, and the CEL is still on..
i think the mechanics working on my car dont know what theyre doing..
any other educated feedback will be appreciated.
thanks
