Post Synchromesh: Some feedback

-

It's time for me to replace the transaxle lubricant (at least according to the dealer) and I wanted to get some feeback from some of you guys who went with GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh early on.

- Have you seen real improvements (less gear grinding and so on)?

- Have you detected any negative effects?

- Have you been told by any reliable source that it could void the transaxle waranty?

One last question: Does anyone know a place to buy it online?

Thanks guys!

I use GM synchromesh and even coming from BG synchroshift it was a nice improvement. From stock it would be just awesome. The shifts are real smooth, as if you're moving the shifter through butter. I can't really think of any negative effects.

Just go to a GM dealership and buy it there. Saves you some money since you don't have to pay shipping.

I heard they sell it for 10$... while the Pennzoil branded product can be had for almost half of that. I've just got to find a store that sells it... online or not. But I'd rather not drive all over town to find it... I'd end up paying more in gas than for the product itself.

Isn't it the other way around, the Pennzoil is more expensive than the synchromesh?

Almost garanteed the GM dealer will bend you over. I agree with the online or other source idea.

I found the first three bottles of it that I put in my car in a NAPA parts store in a suburb of Denver, CO. The other three bottles, I bought at a local GM dealer. I paid more at NAPA than at the dealer.

While I won't go as far as to say it's a magic bullet for your tranny, it certainly improved the feel of mine. I've been running the stuff for 50,000+ miles, and have noticed no negative effects. Positive effects noted have been better shifting, even when it's FYBO cold; fluid drains and fills easier because this stuff flows easier; and best of all, it doesn't reek like gear lube.

Did you buy the GM or Pennzoil brand? I know they're the exact same product... but I've never heard of it being sold as the GM brand unless you get it at the GM dealer.

I can't seem to find any negative comments anywhere... looks like this is the stuff to put in. Since I'll be spending time doing this myself, I might as well put in the good stuff once I'm at it.

BTW: The service manual says I have to put some sealant when putting the drain cap back on... anyone know what that is about???

I bought the GM stuff. Even the bottles I got at NAPA were GM branded.

My service manual says nothing about sealant.
1.Remove the filler plug.
2.Remove the drain plug and drain the oil.
3.Tighten the drain plug to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 32 ± 2 N·m (24 ± 1 ft-lb)
4.Fill with gear oil API classification GL-4 SAE 75W - 85W or 75W - 90 until the level comes to the lower portion of filler plug hole.
Quantity: 2.2 dm3 (2.3 quarts)
5.Tighten the filler plug to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 32 ± 2 N·m (24 ± 1 ft-lb)
