Chattering sound from Tranny? (attn Otter)

Well it has been brought up here before, but no one has been able to find the problem. Both Otter and I have replaced our Throw Out Bearings, and yet we still get the chattering coming from the tranny. Once the clutch is depressed though the chatter goes away. We both have new throw out bearings, so we have eliminated that.

My buddy who has a similar sound in his Audi S4 Stage 3 says its flywheel chatter. And for his car is was confirmed to be flywheel chatter, now that's because he has a light weight flywheel. Can our cars have flywheel chatter from stock clutches??

So my question is who else gets this chatter? What are your thoughts on it? I've been under a lift and everything and can't find out what it is... I currently have a Works Stage 1 Clutch, and even on my stock clutch I had the chatter.
Discuss...

PS: Happy Thanksgiving to all.. for the last 9 minutes of it here on the East Coast..

my brothers truck did that. if it was the throw out bearing wouldn't it only make noise with the clutch depressed? we always assumed it was in the transmission itself, and that it was caused by pulling more weight than it's supposed to.

I've had chatter since the car was still almost new. It's worse when it's cold.

O yea I meant the car is at idle at a rest. You can hear it get louder when you lightly tap the gas, and on top of that it goes away when you push the clutch pedal down.

I notice that it gets really bad when i drive the car for long terms, or when its in colder climates.

Since it happens with the clutch out but not in it shouldn't be the throw out bearing, the stress on it is with the clutch depressed.

Even in neutral the clutch is transferring motion to the tranny. You are hearing that motion, which is a sign of wear. It's not necessarily impending failure, my brothers truck didn't have any problems with the tranny up to the day he totaled it, but it's not good.

It's the only logical line of thinking.

Chatter is a bad description of the sound, or at least a bad description of what I'm getting. What I get is a rattling sound when cruising with the RPMs in the 3200-3300 area that goes away when I lightly rest my foot on the clutch pedal. I had thought it was the TOB, but turned out to not be the case. I'm now suspecting it's something furthur up the line having to do with the clutch master cylinder.

a few guys have had those go out already, haven't they?

and that's definitely not the same issue as what he's describing. yours is much harder to guess at.

EDIT: have you ever thought to see if your clutch pedal is hitting something

Yeah, thought about it and checked for it, but I'm pretty sure the sound is coming from the engine side of the firewall. I'll likely take another look at things this weekend.

yea I only hear my sound when i'm in neutral and the rpm's are at idle... When i'm cruising its fine... I don't get it, it started litterally 50 miles into having the clutch done, and on the stock clutch I noticed it after driving roughly.. 500-600 miles on since i got the car.

what tranny fluid are you using, how long has it been since you changed it, have you had it analyzed and have you checked it for pieces of metal?

You know there is a TSB on the idler gear for 5 speed RA's. I guess there is something wrong with them that they prematurely wear and rattle at idle. Mine made a weird rattle and i narrowed down to internal. Clutch/flywheel chatter would be releasing the clutch and the clutch disc is partialy warped so it "skips" on the flywheel and pressure plate. Just trying to help...Hope i did..

I'm using mitsubishi grade oil (stuff I bought from them) I did my tranny change when i replaced my clutch, wasn't much for metal parts floating around, I had the shop clean it out pretty well too. (They gave me all the replaced parts etc.

still leaning towards the tranny myself, although I have noticed some noise coming from my belt area as well. I had attributed it to normal wear and was just gonna do the tensioner when it started showing physical signs of wear too. I have not been able to hear these noises from the cabin however. and I am sure it's not clutch chatter either, that wouldn't happen at idle
