Question need sixth gear

when you look up a bio on a 04 ralliart it says it uses a evo 8 shifter and gear box. this is probley not true ok... also told mitsu uses same trans different iternals also probley not true . is there any way to get a sixth gear.( going as far as cutting a bell houseing and spliceing it to another.. case for a mr example) or is a 5th gear all i get. it feels so held back

No. Also, we do use the Evo 8 shifter and the internals on most Mitsu 5 speed trannies are similar/interchangable. If you do some homework on the MR 6 speed, it really doesn't gain them any benefit, either.

our trannies can bolt right up to the evo 4g63 engine and i have a short shifter on my RA thats made for an evo soooo id say their pretty similar. besides the the high rpms in 5th theres really no use for a 6th gear IMO.

well wouldnt adding a 6th gear give us a higher top speed or let highway cruising speeds stay in the lower rpms? my buddy has a VW gti with the 6 spd and he drove my car (which keeps up with his car just fine when romping on it) and he said my car just didnt feel torqy enough. so im guessing adding a 6th gear would give us a few more gears for the sake of torque. granted they are two completely different cars and all but i could see adding a 6th gear pretty useful

my girlfriend has an 08 civic si. it has a 6speed.... when he drives slow (normal) she spends half the day shifting gears. and when she drives it fast, the gears wind down to quick, so she's playing w/ the clutch to often. Sixth gear at low rpms has absolutly no power at all. she has to downshift to really get up and go. we have good power in our fifth gear, as opposed to there sixth.... just my .02

Plus, good luck figuring out the ecu problems that come with changing the tranny.

The only real reason I would add a 6spd tranny is for lower highway rpm's because im always running alittle late to school and mivec eats my gas right up

well our cars do have quite a bit more torque than the new SI's, the civ has what 139 ft/lbs or something like that, i dunno about you guys but pushing the clutch in a few more times a day wouldnt bother me that much. to me it would be like putting coilovers on, because if you wanna take corners faster you gotta deal with how bumpy and rough the car becomes, so shifting a few more times is just something you have to deal with IMO

hm.. 6 gears.. I already get lost with 5... I rarely use the 6th on my bike... I think I'm good with 5 right now.

"need turbo and awd" thread coming to the forums next... O wait nvm... there are 100+ of em'.

Btw the work needed to swap in a 6 speed tranny would take a lot of research cause our ECU's are only programmed for 5 speeds I would say... If you do it, more power to you.

It would be cool because I find myself looking for an extra gear all the time. But I mean I wouldnt think it would save me money in the end because gas isnt $10 a gallon yet, so how are you gonna justify saving money on gas. This project would be expensive.

yea it would deffinetely be a lot of money and probably not worth it in the long run, but just had to get my .02 in. maybe someone will find a cheaper way to do it in near future before i get rid of my car

well i will bolt up soo thats good but im not so sure the ecu and the tranny will get to confused by it all i dont believe anyone has gone in the the ecu lookin for tranny stuff, so i think its pretty much the deep blue sea for that.

Wait, how can the evo tranny bolt right up when the evo tranny is designed for AWD? I don't see how that's possible without modifying the tranny to only run in FWD format. A 6th gear is nice some of the time but hardly needed. I doubt that a 6 speed designed for a turboed car that has a much different powerband would work properly on a NA car.
