Gear chatter going into second

Last weekend I changed the gear oil in my 2004 ralliart. The car has about 60,000 miles on it so I figured its time. Also I was having a hard time getting it into first and second when it was cold. I changed the fluid with Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90. The gears seem to shift much smoother but now when the car has been sitting for a while in 30 degree temps I get a chatter/grind going into 2nd gear. I'm not sure what to do about this. I am considering changing to redline lightweight shockproof.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also once the car is at operating temp it shifts fine.

I have been running Redline MT90 in mine for about 8 months and I love it. I have yet to run it in really cold weather but the next couple of months should put it to a test. For Ralliarts Redline recommends running a blend of the MT90 and MTL. It is something like 2 bottles MTL to One Bottle MT90 or visa versa. Give them a call and they could tell you. Amsoil and BG Syncroshift are also great gear oils. PM Oildoc if you want Amsoil as he can give you a discount.

mobil one is a bad choice for our trans...
Try GM Synchromesh, a lot of evo's run that stuff.

Basically, whatever works best for Evo trans works best for us. "Over the counter" common trans oils tend to do poorly in our gearbox. All the good ones have been listed above.

GM Synchromesh is the easiest to get ahold of (any GM dealer). My personal preference is for either BG Sychroshift II (synthetic) or Amsoil.

Thanks for the input guys. I am changing it this weekend....I hope nothing was damaged I don't think anything was but sustained use of the current oil would eventually cause some serious damage. One more question I know that many people run redline oil and that is a synthetic. Is the problem that mobile one just doesn't work with our car even though its the correct weight? Someone made a comment that maybe synthetics are too slick for the syncros and they are not slowing down fast enough. What does anyone think about this?

Your sychros require some friction to function properly. Some synthetic oils are too slick for the syncros. Redline shockproof is too slick as well as Mobil One. Just go with one of the ones listed above. Amsoil, GM/BG Sychroshift, or the Redline Blend. All have been proven to work well.

Not sure where you got that info from, but whoever it was did nothing but start another Urban Myth that will perpetuate.

The problem with Redline Shockproof is that it is a petroleum based productand the paraffin tends to build on the gears and synchs.

AMSOIL MTG Manual Transmission Gear Lube is a Superior Product being used by Professional EVO Racing Teams.
