? on stage 2 cam

do you really need a cam gear for just a stage 2? I know the valve springs would help but not absolutely necessary and was wondering if the cam gear is absolutely necessary.
thanks for the input.

RPW will say yes (because of their design):
From their site on stage 2 cams, " Valve springs are required and RPW has specifically matched valve springs in stock for the desired camshaft profile. There may be specific forced induction springs V naturally aspirated spring packages so please ask.
Vernier cam gear is recommended but not necessary "

but RRM will tell you no (because of their design):
I'd asked Rob recently on this topic after scoring a major deal on their no longer produced RRM stage 2, "This cam, or any from us, did not require any springs
or anything. It was designed to work with the stock valvetrain. That is
why we had it made that way. Other cams required a bunch of stuff and
we did not want that."

I doubt it would blow up the car , it's probably more related to turbo guys getting the cam and having tuning problems or people that had the cam then went turbo an tuning. Either way I've heard of this complication but na is the way

RPW does not have valve springs and you not need them... running an RPW stage 3 cam, still working on tune

Maybe this will help
RPW Stage 2 Camshaft Profiles

1. The stage 2 profile is designed to be bolted on to either a modified or near stock vehicle.
2. The camshaft lift and duration are increased over standard for a slightly rough idle and acceleration.
3. The camshaft is designed to improve more mid range and top end power, with a slight loss of low rpm torque.
4. These camshafts can also be designed as a Supercharger / Turbo / Nitrous stage 2 camshaft profile where these items are added onto a Naturally Aspirated vehicle.
5. Valve springs are required and RPW has specifically matched valve springs in stock for the desired camshaft profile. There may be specific forced induction springs V naturally aspirated spring packages so please ask.
6. Vernier cam gear is recommended but not necessary
7. Vehicle will require in most circumstances, ECU modifications for fuelling.
8. There are no clearance issues with piston to valve clearance with these camshafts and for the majority of vehicles, we do not recommend going large than this camshaft profile
9. Vehicles running SOHC Mivec ie Ralliart Lancer only run a mild change to the primary lobes, and a mild change to secondary lobes.
Though it says above, the specs page says no need to worry about springs until stage 3.. hm..

Besides the changes or issues Rob's told me in my emails that the stage 2 grind was sublet work done by a third party cam guy, who went out of business.

Good luck in your search.
