I'm no expert, but i would say putting gear oil in an automatic trans would be a bad idea. I would imagine it would work, but i'm not exactly sure how the pump, and torque converter would handle a heavier fluid. Plus for automatic, you need a shiytload more oil than a manual, might get expensive if you wanted to use high end gear oil. ATF and an oil cooler would probably bee your best bet.

Take the fill plug out, it's a bolt on the front of the transmission case, and it says "oil" on it. If you pull that out and fluid comes out, it's full, if not stick your baby finger in the hole, the fluid level should be at the bottom of the hole, if it's not it's low...i actually overfilled mine slightly, a friend of mine does that so i tried it out. Take a fluid sample, to see what it looks/feels like, if it's dirty, replace it through the same hole, the drain plug is on the differential case.Originally Posted by keithislegit
Oh yeah, I also want to know how do you check your transmission oil and when should it be changed?

how hard is it to install an oil cooler for the trans though? do i have to completely drain the current fluid?

Not sure, i am not an automatic transmission guru, i learned to drive in a 1988 bronco 2 5-speed, only my truck was auto, but i just used it for moving stuff, lumber etc.Originally Posted by Raikiri

Who was the guy that was turbo and auto? i think it was one of the PR guys, i don't remember who it is, but i think he had installed one...i'm sure there's kits and half-arsed instructions somewhere on the net. I can't see it being too difficult.

I just installed mine last week. It's very simple, it took me almost 2 hours but I took my time. You don't have to drain all the fluid. When you'll disconnect the hose some will come out but not a lot. One thing I would advise buy a coupler fitting from home Depot to connect the new hose to the old one and buy some extra hoses, the one that comes with the kit is not long enough.Originally Posted by Raikiri

Just follow the recommended intervals in the owner's manual. I believe the suggested regular interval is 7500 miles.Originally Posted by keithislegit
Ahhh, so after how many miles should a completely stock Ralliart need an oil change? I'm guessing I'll go to the store to check out AMSoil and Royal Purple and see which one I like best.

I'm at like 94.5k right now. In the manual it says I need one at 97k I believe? But Otter, I have a question, my oil light keeps coming on when I idle. But my oil is fine, I checked it and it's brand new oil. They put it in right before I bought the car. Do I have a bad sensor or something?Originally Posted by otter

No.
Part # MD138993, available from your local dealer, or any of the various online parts vendors. Mitsubishiparts.net lists it for $17.35

Keith you can buy that from Rock Auto for about 5 buckx plus shipping. The sensor is located at the back of the block. It's a little tricky to get at, I used like a 23mm socket to get it out.

you disconnect the wire harness, unscrew it and screw the new one in, it's really simple...
The reason i mentioned the NPT vs BSPT thing is that if the aftermarket sending unit has NPT threads, you'll need an adapter.
