timing belt replacement
Looking for a reputable mechanic shop to get my timing belt replaced in toronto, canada. Went to the dealer and they want 1200 plus tax. thats replacing all the parts needed belts, waterpump, tensioner, and i think they told me balance shaft. Well i almost fell over when they told me the price. I heard you need special tools so if anyone knows of any shop that has done this job and can recommend me to them would be a great help. I have a 04 sportback ralliart .
Thanks

i could do it for you next week for a decent price if you had all the parts, i'm on vacation right now at home, but i have to go back to borden august 7th, you only need one special tool, and you really don't even need that, but it makes the last step much easier, it's a 1/4 drive adapter that fits on that tensioner bearing/pulley with the two little peg holes in it. Other than that pretty ordinary tools will do the trick. Mine took about 2 hours by myself, it's a bit of a pain in the ****.
Lazukard is correct, that kit will work fine, however you may not need everything in that pic, example thermostat...good idea, not required, plus it's easy and you could do that later. And i'm certain you could get OEM parts for around the same price.
And i can't really recommend a place that will do it, cause all shops will charge you marked up retail on the parts and $100 or more an hour, and take their time. That's how they make money. Not that they are trying to rip you off and milk you for labour time, that's the going rate for people who don't fix their own cars, and their not going to bust their *** to save you money.
the best you can do is get the parts cheap, and then bring it to a shop that's not run down, but also isn't a "chain" garage, and hope they only take 3 hours or so, you should be able to save a few hundred bucks. They most likely won't warranty the work if you bring parts of unknown origin, cause they won't pay out on a part they tehmselves can't get money back on.

Strange, the dealer told me $750 plus tax including parts and 4 hours of labour. Not as terrible as $1200, but it was the kick in the *** I needed to stop being lazy and do it myself.
Thank you dealer.
Yeah, dont be intimidated by the special tool BS. You will find a way to swing that pulley, and if you are changing the auto tensioner, ( the part that adjusts the tension) you wont need that special tool ( read as long bolt) either.

Yeah, I just took my car into a local Mitsu dealer and they quoted $750 parts/labour for the entire kit.
I live in a condo and am driving to Edmonton tomorrow so there's no way I have the time/space to do it myself so I went ahead and gave them the
to get er done
The plus side I guess; I paid very little for my car and I'm working tonnes of doubletime
lol
The car has 150k on it and I'm not 100% sure if the previous owner had the timing belt done (I have a strong feeling they did) but, I'm not taking the risk with a high compression engine. Peace of mind costs money.
If you have the know-how and the time, do it yourself

If your engine is stock it's not high compression, (9:1) but changing the belt is the way to go when you cannot verify that it was done.
@ RalliartN
I think/hope they would have said balance shaft belt.
It would make sense to change that belt too while you're in there.

Ahh yes true my friend hehe, I mean the chances of bending valves and engine damage is much higher in the ralliart over the low compression engine I was bombing around in before
I drive hard, I just can't help myself
I want the peace of mind for sure

+1
Like i said not needed, but very handy to ensure perfect tension on the T belt. It can be done with zero special tools, that's the key point and 750$ for parts is rape, and it took me less than 4 hours in my gravel drive way by my self on cinder block jack stands.
