2004 RA Trans (Rebuild It // Purchase Used)

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get some work done on my transmission. I know for sure that the input shaft bearing needs to be replaced but which route should I take? Should I get it rebuilt or should I scavenge for a used trans?

I know that CRANSWICK rebuilt his own trans but I'm not as auto-mechanically-inclined lol.

I would like to save as much money as I can as I am tight on my budget because of school, debt, and OSAP -- these 3 kill your income...

Let me know your thoughts, please!

If ANYONE would like to HELP ME REBUILD IT (fun car project, i guess) that would be AMAZING

Thanks everyone!

how long can you be without a car? and what's your budget?

i may be able to lend you a car, but that depends on when you need this done...are you doing the clutch as well?

i might even have a brand new input shaft bearing, i accidentally ordered two, but i forget if it was the clutch side or far side bearing...

do you need synchro work?

WOW i knew he'd be all over it! he's been helping me with my RA since BEFORE i even bought it LOL!! CRANS youre amazing man!

as for your questions...

1. "how long can you be without a car?"
-- i can be without it as long as it takes to get it fixed because i don't want anything bad happening to my RA just cos i'm prolonging an important/very necessary fix.

2. "and what's your budget?"
-- right now, i would say not too much. i just paid my bills so i have below $300 i know it's too low but i'll keep saving up! i'm not gonna let my RA down!

3. "are you doing the clutch as well?"
-- i'm pretty sure it needs to be done so if it needs to be done, then i SHOULD get it done

4. "do you need synchro work?"
-- i do

hope this helps! thanks so much for your efforts man! i knew i could count on EvoM and CRANS to come through! i love this forum!!!

can't wait to hear from you guys!

When my throw out bearing went out, I was in the same position as you. I wanted to get as much preventative work done while the transmission would be worked on anyway. I couldn't find anyone that knew how/show me how to rebuild my trans. Local shop prices were high just to open the transmission. If you could, I say save a bit more and search around for parts.

I ended up with used transmission for $250 (34,xxx mi on it). I had someone help me with the work/knowledge and replaced clutch/flywheel also. I'm sure the trans could have lasted but I figured if I could prevent any further problem and hassle of pulling it out again, then I should do it at this time.

That be great if you could find someone to help you rebuild, it would be awesome learning. How many miles do you have on your transmission? I had about 113k when mine went out. Good luck!

***Here's the website I found mine at.****

Might have to call some of the places and talk to them a bit. That's how I got mine down a bit in price.

Rubez makes a good point, but if the transmission isn't completely toast, it's not worth replacing...unless you have a completely spun bearing, or you've shredded the teeth of a gear, a quick rebuild should be fine, it won't be too bad, price wise, the clutch will be the most expensive part, as they are around the $300 mark for an OEM replacement...if we pulled the transmission, and your clutch is worse than my old clutch, we could use that for free, but that is not ideal...but it does still have some meat on it.

i'll talk to my friend about it, we can work out a date, he's got all the tools we'll need to do it...

@Rubez: Thank you for the info that you provided!!! I searched it up and there's nothing here in ONTARIO for a 2004 RA MT 2.4L. Kind of disappointing cos ONTARIO is WHERE IT'S AT!! hahaha!!

also just wanna say thanks to everyone who's been supporting me directly/indirectly through their informative threads!
