i followed the procedure to the letter, and took note of the "half notch ahead" on the rear balance shaft, and all turned out well...

This might be a totally dumb question so I apologize if you want to face palm after. Is there any way I can tell how much time I have left on my timing belt? I'm not sure if it got replaced at the scheduled maintenance period. Car drives fine so I probably shouldn't worry, just curious if its something I can be proactive about and watch.

You can check it for visible cracks or stretching but there's really no way to tell if you have a year or a day.

how many miles on the car?..
if it's over 60k i'd suggest doing them...the more over 60k, the more i'd consider it...

i bought my car @ 86kmi, and replaced the belts @ 100kmi...im pretty sure it was the oe belts...im dreading getting to 160k when i have to do it again, not too bad to do, just time consuming and somewhat expensive...i really dont wanna drop ANOTHER $300 on it again....but i will if i need to, sadly this time otter's not around to help
hope i remember how to do it...

(on another note:...speaking of this....i really dont like having to buy this car over in parts in general...lol...it's not even paid off yet...grr)

lanzer is correct, only inspecting the belt will tell you...i johnny, i forget what you said your odometer was at, but from what i remember if it hasn't been done, it could very well be time to do it...i should have thought of that when we had your car in the shop...

The belt might have gotten replaced at the 90k mark since I know a dealership had the car at that point. Then again they might not have. My car proof report showed it was traded into a dealership when it was at 85k. The dealership then used it one of their rides for 22k, then sold it to the guy I got from in an auction.

i would pull the upper timing cover and inspect the belt, procedure's in the manual...if it needs doing and you want a hand, i could definately lend a hand.

Well I check out the belt and it looks pretty damn new. No cracking or brittling. All the markings are still on the rubber to boot. There were tool marks on the bolts which indicate the covering had been removed before. So my gut tells me, it got replaced at the scheduled 90k mark.

if it's a mitsubishi dealer i'd call and ask, they should be able to pull the history(if it was done there), personally i'd assume it wasnt and do it anyway....when i replaced my belt @ 100k, i can put $ on it being the oe belt and still had all the normal markings etc, no cracking or wear, but you could see it was noticeable stretched when compared to a new one...if it's not a mitsu dealer i'd put $ down they didnt...most used cars sold at dealers come from auction sales, not ussually from a trade-in or outright sale or sumn like that...

maybe they did something else and had to remove the covers...maybe the previous owner...maybe some1 else inspected it too but not replaced it...trust me, i work at a dealer(not mitsu tho, we're jag), and the used car dept is the WORST for actually paying for repairs...specially if it's maintenance...and it's like that everywhere(not just my dealer)...unless it's a concern where it's safety related, or something the customer will say hey it makes noise/vibrates/looks off/or whatever they will not do it...it's hard enough to sell them an air filter when it looks like a mudpie some times, if it came in needing a timing belt, it'll leave needing one still...specially if they dont normally work on those cars on a day to day basis...

for example: theres a service bulletin on certain jaguars(where i work) where the serp belt and/or sc belt chirps and squeals at idle horribly loud, everybody in here knows about it...we got 2 used cars in wich needed the updated pulles, belts and brackets, and guess what?....the customer had to buy them because "it's not a maintenance issue or a safety concern"...one customer bought the car and complained about it and basically offered to either we fix it or he would return the car and they denied the repair, so he returned the car...the next customer who bought the same car basically said he wouldnt buy the car without the updated parts installed so they rolled it into the price of the car...and the customer was angry but ended up buying it anyway...the other car still makes noise...and is still on the lot, still being complained about the noise...but no repairs made to date...

ps sorry for the long post...but just letting u know how things are done ussually at dealers for your enlightenment...
