Oil Pressure Gauge

Checking to see if anyone has installed an Oil Pressure gauge in their RA. I'd like to do this, as it really bothers me that there isn't one, but I'm really not sure what all is involved (never done this kind of thing before). Can the stock sensor be used, or is a new one needed?

I installed my oil pressure gauge a few months ago. I have the autometer gauge and it came with an oil press. sending unit. As far as the factory one, I bought a T fitting so I could still keep the factory unit. It is metric, so you will have to adapt the T fitting to a metric male end and install.

I'd like to put on in my car. The lack of one from thje factory bothers me, as well. I'd like to be able to watch the oil pressure rise on startup, especially after an oil change.

I'm not sure how the RA is set up, but if it's similar to my DSM, there should be an allen plug you can take out near the oil filter, and put in a sending unit.

Idiot lights are for idiots.

I don't really care about no oil pressure gauge. I WOULD be upset with no tempurature gauge, so long as there is a tempurature gauge, I am happy.

My brother's old car ('95 Neon, stick) had an oil pressure gauge, but NO TACH! That would be a deal-breaker for me. No way I'd get a stick-shift car with no tach. The lack of oil pressure gauge in the RA is mildly irritating, by comparison.

Maybe they had too many complaints from people with Eclipses about the sending unit wire coming off while they drive. The first time mine did that, I saw the needle drop to 0. I didn't even pull over, I shut the engine off and coasted off the side of the road. I looked for the oil slick on the road, and then checked the dipstick. It said it was full, so I started the engine again. The light came on, then shut off, but the needle never moved.

I found the loose wire the next day while changing the oil, and put an alligator clip on it.

Where did you find the T fitting and the adapter? Perhaps share which autometer gauge you got while you're at it.

All you need to do is remove the factory oil sending unit, and replace it with the fitting that comes in the kit, you don't need a "T" fitting, those factory warnning lights are useless,by the time the light comes on, it's too late. so save yourself some trouble just get rid of the old sending unit, i did and it's much easyer that way. It's your call.

Yes, but wouldn't that cause the dash light to be eternally lit? I suppose I could remove the light bulb.

Either way you do it you will still need a way to adapt the oil sending unit to your car. I don't know which one comes with which kit, but I got the autometer phantom gauge and the oil sending unit needed adapting. If the gauge you get has one that works, i say go with it.

I have heard that it will stay on continuosly also. You could take out the bulb and not worry about it, but I didn't just incase the gauge stopped working properly (backup).

OK OK guys here are the facts, i am a Mecanic by trade first off, and for thoes of you who don't know how a pressure switch works, here it goes. The switch has constant pressure on it, like your oil pressure gauge does, it has a 1 wire connection wich is a ground wire, if for some reason the oil pump in your engine stops working and pressure drops it triggers a connection in your oil pressure switch and turns you light on in the dash,so by pulling off the wire and letting it hang or if you want to tie it up,is up to you. The connection will be broken,no circuit can be made and the light will never come on.......WHEW!!! so for you who are debating on how to connect it just plug it directly into the place where the stock pressure switch was, trust me i works fine, i have a pressure gauge on my car and it works great!! have fun with your install.

That's good pressure, my ralliart runs at about 19-20psi at idle and at 65-70 at about 120km at highway speed,so your pretty much at a good PSI.
